Ritz Camera has this sale. Is this a good deal? What about the lens that comes with it? Is it a good one that produces clear sharp pics and in what situation would you use it?

i like canon a lot, but for that money i'd be into a nikon D50 for the lens difference.

not too many people are happy with the 18-55 lens that is known as the kit lens.
one good thing many people over look about wolf/ritz is they offer NO tax, or shipping cost. But if you buy it on line you cant take it to a store and complain about it. they will tell you to contact customer service. Someting about the actual stores being a different company as the web site store
I got my Sigma 105mm macro from wolf.com and it was they had the lowest price that week

Buy the body and then get the lens you want. And you can do al lot better then $899 if you look around.
B&H, who do not usually have the lowest prices, are selling the same body for $799 in your choice of either black or silver. And B&H has a better service record then Ritz.

I'll add my agreement to two of the points already made.
Buy locally, if you have that option, and you'll be rewarded by personalized service. The salesperson where I bought gave me a full one-hour tour of my equipment and was able to recommend the memory card and lens filter I needed. I have since been back numerous times for an accessory or two and sometimes just free advice.
Save your money. Don't get the kit lens. Put the additional $$$ towards something better. If I knew then what I know now I would have bought something like a 28-75 f2.8 (Being discussed here, today.) Though I might miss the wide-angle of the 18mm in the kit lens, I would really love to have f2.8! The kit lens is also soft in manual focus....wiggles a bit much for me and sometimes drops out unless I have my hand on the focus ring. |

| I purchased mine from wolfcamera witch is the same a ritz.com. If you buy from them they have a 3 yr warranty (cost me $144) if you drop or damage the camera in anyway they will replace if they cannot fix. If the camera is no longer being made then they will replace with a equal or better model based on specs and manufacture. Good Deal! |

I would buy it from somewhere els,
go to pricegrabber.com and type in canon rebel xt and it will give you a list of prices, if you go to ritz you will spent lots of money your dont need to spend, and a waranty for the camera, add it to your home owners or renters policy and your covered,

Ok, thanks! I'm glad that I asked! :) The reason I was wondering is because I have a Wolf Camera a couple of blocks from my house and go there all of the time. I'd love to buy from them but it depends on their price. If I can get it a lot cheaper somewhere else then I will.

well, extra batteries can come in the future, i shot a wedding on saturday night and used only one battery, i filled up my whole 2 gig card, and the price of a memory cards are cheap, you can get 1 gig at costco or sams for 70bucks, or you can try buy.com and get one with a 10% discount for new customers on first purchases,

I bought the Rebel XT jusat Monday and didn't buy any extra batteries or memory. I already have a 1 GB and 512MB card. I figured first add on would be 2GB card and a battery grip and extra battery.

rex, when I got my rebel I did the same thing. With the camera got an extra battery and battery grip. Makes a big difference in your hands (the battery grip that is).
The only other thing I got is a UV filter but that's for lens protection, not UV protection. I've been fine with 1.5 gigs of memory, but I haven't switched to RAW yet. When I do, I'll probably pick up more memory.
Now lenses... that's a whole different ball park!

I did see an ad once in LA that included the Rebel 300 (previous release), battery grip, tripod and a couple other goodies. Excellent deal if you don't have your heart set on a 350.... |

I've run out of batteries before in the middle of a party or a big hike or something. Nothing more frustrating. Would rather spend a little more money for assurance of mind. Also been in situations where I forgot/had no access to recharge batteries, so a spare one can come in handy...
Suppose that qualifies as shooting for hours at a time :) |

Having an extra battery in your camera bag saves embarasment for those times when you go out shooting and leave your battery in the charger. :-)
Besides, sometimes you forget to charge the battery in the first place.

I think the kit-lens get a hard time. Admittedly it feels really cheap, but it does the job. And seems to be the most affordable wide-angle about if you are on a budget. I did without it when I bought my 350D and got the tamron 28-75 F2.8, and picked up the USM kitlens for $80, really glad i did, I love it for landscapes, and as long as you stop it down its sharp enough for me.
Sonifo certainly put it to good use!
