I've got the 85mm 1.8, (and like it), and the 1.2 is "on my list", so let us know how you like it when you get it! :-)

I'm still waiting for somebody to figure out how to use the FD version on the EOS mount so I can actually afford it... Apparently you have to modify the lens.

oh btw, interestingly enough, the 1.8 actually does beat the 1.2 in the center and in corners in terms of sharpness (yeah only sharpness, well... and CA) at F5.6 iirc. The L lens wins everywhere else, especially in the corners.

Good thing most people rarely use the 85/1.2 at f/5.6.

I have a 70-200 2.8 if I need that focal length / aperture combo ;o)

The f/1.2 also loses on autofocus speed by a factor of four, and is a lot heavier, and the sharpness differences are marginal in either direction. You might want to take a look at Castleman's comparison review.

Manual focus is used primarily with this lens. I'll also be using this lens @1.2 or 1.4. I noticed he didn't do any sharpness tests at 1.2 just 1.4.

I only wish I had the client list to justify the purchase of the 1.2--what an impressive looking hunk of glass. I'd also like the 135mm f2.

In the meantime, though, I'm making do with some nice old manual lenses for portrait work. Cool things like the Helios 40-2 85mm f1.5, Nikkor 85mm f1.8, and the Vivitar Series 1 135mm f2.3--all very nice lenses, and all for less than the price of the Canon 85 f1.8--Woo-hoo! I'll do the focusing myself, thanks.

Compare this to a lot of other lenses and this doesn't look bad even at 5.6.

The 85/1.2 was designed to be sharp at wide aperture settings because the wide settings are this lenses selling point. If you notice on the chart the 85/1.2 is sharper at the borders wide open then the 85/1/8 is at f/2.8. That in itself is impressive.

the posted portrait example for the 5d was shot with the 85mm 1.8, so if the 1.2 is even shaper, I'm going to be filling lots of memory cards!
