Send him a flavor of UNIX Ronin...[/i]
I first did typesetting on a DEC PDP-11/70 running UNIX using vi an troff over a 300 baud modem (and you think your dialup is slow!) -- but if I really am going to go back to that, I''ll get a G4/OS X. As for ME, I don''t ask it to do much, and I hesitate always to "fix" or upgrade things which are working. I think I can install XP if I can ever back up all the files first.
Thanks for your concern!

I'm on Mac OS 9.2.2 on a G4 with 1 GB of RAM and IE 5.1 over a cable line. The problem is not completely consistent for me. Sometimes I can get a run of 30 or 40 photos in, but usually it conks out after 10 or so. I think I used to have the problem when I used to vote on the PC at work, but I haven't done that in a while due to the badly calibrated monitor.

The hang thing is persistant across all os''s, it seems. It happens to me on my windows xp machine with dsl.
Not every 10 images mind you, it varies. But I''ll be voting along and "POW" votus interruptus.
Very distracting.

interesting, mcmurma. i have xp on my main computer and it doesnt happen to me.
now sometimes there's a long pause in the server response, but the little browser activity icon in the upper right keeps going, and then eventually, it does go to the new page.
maybe one just needs to wait a little longer? or is the whole thing just dead in the water? |

For me, the browser icon eventually stops, and no amount of waiting results in any change.

Don't know about MAC sys' but of those with pc's how often do you do disk cleanup and disk defrag?? I use win XP IE6, do regular cleanups and never have hangs unless I have 6 or more apps going at once. Are you running anything else at the same time? How much stuff do you have running in the background? Could be lots of things.

I defragged last week. It didn't make a difference. I've tried it with almost nothing else running, but there was no improvement. My system itself only hangs sometimes when I'm running IE. I haven't tried voting with another browser, but, if I had to bet on the problem, I'd put my money on it being IE related. Maybe I'll setup another browser for next week's voting.

Well, we'd like the site to work perfectly with IE, since it offers the best css/dhtml support. We've designed the site using IE (tested of course in other browsers). I must say, though, that we're all but baffled on this problem.

Oh Ronin, I'm impressed that you typed it correct! I thought NT admins only knew how to "point and click" ;-) |

I like this idea.
A voting page where you get 10 640x480 images with the 1-10 radio box and comment field, and a single submit button at the bottom. Not only would images continue to be downloaded whilst Im considering the first image, I'd also be able to compare images to each other in a group.
There is the danger that one really good pic in a group may make the other look better or worse, so some kind of randomiser to show different voters different groups of pics might be an idea. |

UberFish,
I'd be relunctant to see something like that implemented, as it might imply that the photos should be compared to each other. Most of us would like to see each photo scored on its own merits. I wouldn't want to give anyone the idea that they should rate the photos from most to least favorite and use each number once.

Why should breaking up the thumbnail page into subpages (like a font index site) cause one to compare the pictures on just that one sub page?
I like working with the thumbnails after I have voted but don't see why they need to be part of the initial download either. Just runs the whole thing longer for dialups. aelith |
