Well, it was very overcast Friday nite here, so I couldn't get any shots. So I am offering an avi that I made of the lunar eclipse of October 27, 2004 which I just figured out how to post. The shots were taken with my E10 on 2 minute interval mode. I left out the total eclipse phase, since it was way too underexposed to show anything. All post processing and the avi construction was done in Corel Painter8.

View the AVI (1 meg) here

If any one has shots from Friday night, I'd love to see them.

Bill, that avi is a tremendous accomplishment. I have always wanted to do a photographic record of a lunar eclipse from beginning to end but have never mustered the patience.

Have you ever seen the wonderful montage put together by Japanese astrophotographer Akira Fujii? Here is a link to his shot. If your originals are of sufficient quality, I'd encourage you to attempt this construction, which beautifully shows the diameter (and roundness - if anyone needs convincing) of Earth's shadow.

Again, wonderful shots, congrats!

Thanks so much John! and thanks for that link to Fijii's montage. That is fantastic! My shots were not of that quality, but it would certainly be an interesting project...what a great way to show the shadow of the earth. It really comes to life!

I was really lucky to capture the sequence fully...just a few minutes afterwards clouds obscured the moon. The total sequence took about two hours, if I remember...I set the tripod on the roof and set the E10 to sequence mode and went inside for a beer (or three) going out periodically to make sure that the moon was still in-frame. A moment of panic occured near the end of the eclipse when I was no longer able to tilt the tripod upward enough to keep in frame...I had to reverse the position of the camera on the tripod head and reposition the pod. Didn't miss a beat though...whew!
