I don't know PS very well and I'd like to give this pic a little love. Any suggestions? It was shot in color.

just added a slight s-curve

Just messing around...

Levels to lighten, and blowout highlights
Curves to darken shadows and add contrast
Then I duplicated the original layer and changed the blending mode to lighten. The I ran a diffuse glow filter on the new layer...

Increased contrast via levels, saturation, shifted hue a little. Add two layers on top with a 2px gaussian blur. 1st one with a darkening blending (to remove light sharpening artifacts) and 70% opacity, second is normal blending with 50% opacity (to soften look of picture). Ran through NI to remove jpg artifacts.

Those are cool. You've all inspired me to buckle down and start focusing on my PS skills. I think I'll try and do a version of each one so I can learn new techniques since I'm not familiar with any of them. (sigh)

Thanks again!!!!!

Thanks! It's been a few weeks since I've done one of these. ;-P

Cool pic by the way - great as is or any number of possibilities. Have fun.

I think it looks good as is - very reminiscent of Ansel Adams IMHO. I took a quick stab at it (above). Increased contrast, reduced backlighting, Neat Image, converted to B/W.

Edit to decipher process as best I can.
* Levels, Options, checked enhance monochromatic contrast, check snap neutral midtones, value boxes for highlight and shadow I already have set to 0.5 on each.
* Shadow/Highlight tool, adjusted (values unk) typical workflow does the shadows all the way or close to 0 and Highligts up to about 20%
* Image, Adjustments Color balance, to acheive an overall pleasant blue tone.
* Back to Shadow/Highlight tool, brought shadows down some I believe.
* Image, Adjustments, Selective, drop-down ot Balck and slid bottom (black) slider over to add about 20% to black only levels.
* Made an adjustment to Brightness/COntrats.
* Filter, Noise, Reduce noise, I think due to banding in sky, noise was brought to 10, maintain detail around 15.
* Did some spot healing and regular healing brush tool work, agian to reduced noise and color banding in the sky.
* Layer, New layer via copy.
* Ran the Midnight Sepia action, and in last layer, adjusted at 25% opacity, white and black to level out image a bit, darken some areas, lighten others. (23 steps in that, and do remember making several passes to paint light back in or paint darkness in the adjustment layer.)
* Flatten image.
* Image, Sharpen, Smart sharpen, 35%, 1.1 radius, Gaussian blur and more accurate selected.
* More spot healing brush in skies.
* Shadow/Highlight adjustment again (unk values)
* Layer, new layer via copy.
* Color balance to the blue tones I wanted.
* Eraser tool set to 100% opacity and erased back in lower portion of image back to copy state.
* Hue & Saturation adjustment (unk values)
* Flattened image.
* New layer via copy again, repeat color balance but this time to green tones I wanted.
* Eraser tool again, this time erasing the green from upper portion of image in the layer.
* Flattened image, Hue & Saturation adjustment to suit.
* Eyedropper tool to select lighter areas of rocks and tree trunk, did some highlight & midtone dodging using soft brush, airbrush selected, around 4-5% opacity.
* Coning of pixelized sections of sky, some manual blur tool blurring and cloned out one branch sticking up in the way.

I think that was about it.

Hope someone can make sense of this or try their hand at it.
Basically I start clicking stuff until I am done clicking. LOL

I didn't PS it, I PI'ed it. Is that ok? Just some thoughts on it anyway...I didn't like all the empty space above when the tree itself was so interesting with all the shadows and stuff.

That's pretty cool, Brad! Please do add the details...

And, by the way.... since when did you become "No Camera - Vote Only"? What did I miss?

Alecia... where was this picture taken? If it's a tree I'm thinking of, it's out west of Bangerter Highway and, I dunno, about 120th South. If that's not it, please share... :-)

Done - edited my post - see above ^

Cam thing - sold E-10 last year to cover some of my son's expenses on his car and his State Championship ring, etc. (long story) and in all reality, the camera was a luxury. Maybe next year I'll get back in the game.

LOL - I have a camera actually, courtesy of scalvert.
Same model camera Joey rocked our world here with.
Having been behind an SLR for over 30 years, then 2 years with a dLSR, then trying to use a 1.2MP Point & Shoot is a major mental block.
I'm still using it, just not competing with it - too frustrating.

In time....

I wonder if I sold my camera, if my PS skills would shoot thru the roof like yours. :-)

I *do* like what you're doing!

Hi David,
The Tree is just south of Levan by Yuba lake. My parents are from Richfield so I travel that road frequently. I can't wait to shoot it in the winter with snow cover. I have a fascination with dead trees for some odd reason.
