I was wondering what are some good questions to ask a couple before photographing their wedding. I have a list of about 16, but I dont want to leave anything out. These are the one I have. Can you think of anythisn else.
1. How many people are in your wedding party?
2. How many people to you expect to attend your wedding?
3. Is there anyone who can not be photographed?
4. What are your must have shots?
5. Where is the location of your ceremony and reception?
6. How many prints do you want?
7. Would you like any Black & White prints?
8. Would you like traditional wedding photos, or a new Photojournalism style?
9. Are you using real or artificial flowers?
10. What is the color of the Brides bouquet?
11. What are the wedding colors?
12. Is the wedding formal or informal?
13. Can I photograph during the ceremony?
14. Would you be interested in larger that 8x10 prints?
15. Would you like additional albums for family?
16. Would you be interested in Engagement Photos?

I make the bride prepare my shoot list ahead of time. They can think about it carefully and take their time doing it. This way no one is left out the day of the wedding and I can just go down the list shooting happily...

If the location has 2+ aisles, make sure you know who is coming from where. Nothing like missing a groomsman or two because you set up on the wrong aisle. . . |

Very Important - Ask what the photography restrictions are from the clergy!
Can you use a flash during the ceremony?
If not -- can you use the flash during the processional, the kiss and the recessional?
Can you move around during the ceremony?
I had a ceremony last weekend where the minister wouldn't allow flash during the ceremony and I was told to find a place a stay there. This caused me a bit of panic since the bride had told me this wouldn't be a problem. The alter area was surrounded by massive windows creating wonderful silhouettes but who wants a entire ceremony in silhouette? He told me that if anyone was to use a flash during the ceremony -- even the couples parents -- her would stop the ceremony and request they put the cameras away. |

That's usually at the discretion of the officiant. Most churches don't allow the photographer to use flash in the sanctuary during the ceremony. The B&G are not the people to be asking.

Understood. When the bride and her mother -- who works for the minister BTW -- said there weren't any, I made the mistake of believing them. Never Again! From now on we call the church ahead of time. |

Ask the bride to show you some photos she loves (that way you can see the style she's going for).
Ask her to give one of her friends or family members the responsibility of introducing you (point out to you) the people on the 'must photograph' list.

3. Is there anyone who can not be photographed? Skip this
4. What are your must have shots?
5. Where is the location of your ceremony and reception? duh?
6. How many prints do you want? Skip this
7. Would you like any Black & White prints? Skip this, give them a mix
8. Would you like traditional wedding photos, or a new Photojournalism style? Skip this, photojournalistic wedding photography is NOT new. Offer a mix, some posed, heavy on the candids. Most brides want a mix
9. Are you using real or artificial flowers? what???? who uses fake flowers at a wedding???
10. What is the color of the Brides bouquet? Skip this - who cares???
11. What are the wedding colors? Skip this - bad question, again who cares?
12. Is the wedding formal or informal? Skip this - this does not matter to you. you are there to take photos.
13. Can I photograph during the ceremony? Skip this - ask instead "is FLASH allowed during the ceremony"
14. Would you be interested in larger that 8x10 prints? Skip this - why would you ask this? the only reason I can think of is your using a point and shoot digital camera, and they will think the same.
15. Would you like additional albums for family? Skip this - don't ask, just make it an option. set you price now.
16. Would you be interested in Engagement Photos? |
I'm pretty busy with weddings travis, and if you want some pointers for meeting with couples, PM me.

Here's my list...this is what I ask - the rest I tell them - they hired me for my know-how afterall.
1. How many people are in your wedding party?
2. How many people to you expect to attend your wedding?
5. Where is the location of your ceremony and reception?
13. Can I photograph during the ceremony?
and of course: what time are we starting?
Anything else is either unrelated or in my contract/package details.
I had a girl sitting next to me at a wedding going on about how she's completely forgotten to tell her photographer what kind of cake she's having (her wedding was in two weeks). I just giggled but wanted to slap her silly but instead thanked the good Lord above I wasn't her photographer.
Of course there's the standard family you gotta get in but otherwise I just reassure my clients that I've got it under control.
