Whether you've shot a wedding or been to a wedding with a photog there, what is the appropriate attire for a photog at a wedding?

I started off wearing suits and dressing SUPER formal then I realized nobody expected it and I'm better off wearing something dark colored and comfortable. I wear dress slacks and a nice shirt now.

I would wear darker colors for sure - If you are like me I like to take a lot of candid shots at the wedding - so I try to wear stuff that does not catch your eye so much to be a little of a disturbance as possible. To many layers makes for a hot day. Shoes with rubber bottoms in case the floor is hard - gotta keep it down. Most of all make sure you are comfortable and you can crouch easily.

Hope this helps

I wear dark pants and a nice shirt. Never a tie or tux, unless it's requested. If it's a very formal wedding, a tux might be in order.

Dress up. And try not to sweat profusely or wear anything that exaggerates it.

:-)

Dress shirt and pressed pants. YOu may end up in other people's shots from that day.

Don't take anything new to a wedding, withought trying it. Me and the patner that use to photo weddings with me agreed to wear black pants and a black polo shirt with a kaki vestle with our logo. The first wedding that we shoot his shirt (not a polo has I suggested) that was initialy black was stained with white because of sweat.

From my experiences assisting crabappl3 at weddings, dressing nicely is a must, as well as dressing comfortably enough to allow you to do the job you were hired to do. Danny wears dress slacks, a crisp dress shirt, a nice belt, and dress shoes, which is completely appropriate for most any wedding. I think it will depend upon the formality of the wedding, though...a less-formal wedding would allow the substitution of a nice polo-type shirt instead of the dress shirt.

I've worn dressy slacks and I've worn a dress, but the biggest lesson I have learned about dressing for the wedding is not to wear 2" heels. Not a good thing. ;)

That's a good question...especially for women. Most dresses have zero pockets etc. for extra memory, tissues, whatever.

Most "comfy" shoes for women are not particularly attractive. :(

If you're a large woman (as I am) then your choices are even more limited!

I don't have any answers, but I can understand the concern.

Judy,

Pants or skirts with pockets work best for sure. I found that wearing a dressy dress looked nice, but offered no storage...so I resorted to carrying the extra memory cards and a battery in my um...bra. ;) Whatever works! LOL

All the weddings that I shot, I always wore a suit. Not my best suit though.

Just don't look better then the bride :P

For weddings, wear black pants, a black dress shirt with a tie (but you may be able to take the tie off) and bring a jacket 'just in case' but you probably won't need it. For an outdoor wedding, wear khaki pants, a nice light green dress shirt (short sleeve is fine) and very comfy shoes (both cases). You will be standing the WHOLE time. So, shoes are important. They don't have to look super nice, they have to be pretty nice, but mostly... very orthodic and comfortable!!! Spend $$ to get some good shoes!

Many photographers ask the bride, "do you have any requirements of my attire for the occasion? Would you like me to wear a suit or business casual attire?"

HAHA

I just asked one of my photo friends this same question. He is a VERY well respected and well paid photographer. His reply:

"The less you charge, the more you wear. $800 photogs wear suits or tuxes. $1500 guys wear polo shirts or a dress shirt. $4500 guys and up wear whatever the hell they want."

So there ya go.

I wear a button down shirt and a pair of comfortable off white pants, sometimes khakis. If it's hot, I wear a pair of black leather sandals, or some nice John Fluevogs if it's not.

And I agree with Mavrik's friend, your being hired for the quality of the image, not your looks, just be comfortable. I would NEVER take a job where they expect me to wear a tux or a suit, it's to f***in hot when your running around working. (unless they triple my price!)

...add a sailor hat and you'd look like a navy officer on leave. I for one, would not be caught dead in a black shirt with black pants on. That's so...MC Hammer. Blending in is one thing, reverting back to early 90s fashion is another.

Exactly...I'm strictly a 4" heel girl myself. Joking! But I do always wear heels. My moto: when you're working you still gotta 'work it'. It's bad enough I've gotta sweat my arse off infront of all those single guys time and time again..might as well not look like a train wreck while I'm doing it.

Thank God a woman my age doesn't have to "work it" anymore. Train wreck notwithstanding. :)

I asked the photographer I was working for and his reply was "wear a suit".

He was and still is, one of the highest paid wedding photographers in the area, maybe not the $4500 guy, but more like the $3500 guy.

It's always good to look professional.

I find it's good to look professional and be comfortable. I usually wear dark pants (slacks some people call them but I hate that word) and a nice shirt with black shoes. Because I tend to move around and stretch etc I don't like to wear a tie because sometimes I feel like I'm choking myself with them.

Wow. I just got back from an evening out to find all these posts! Thanks all for the great input!

I find my suit quite comfortable, this also goes for the tux, but I'm not nearly as comfortable in most of my other dress clothes.
