I'm just starting to shot portraits (people)and I want to do some model shoots, for practice and experience. I'm hoping to find people that want 1 or 2 free 11x17 prints and a few smaller 5x7 prints and experience as well. Is this resonable to propose? Or am I faced with paying models to start with?
The second question is how do I go about finding models?
Any advize you can share would be great.
PS. I'm in the Sacramento, CA area. |

I've tried that and it didn't work too well for me. Curious as to what others say though as I am in the same boat as you are. |

Yeah, I was shocked to find that walking up to strange women on the street and asking them to pose nude didn’t work as well as I thought it would - even if you tell them it's for Art. |

Yeah, right? I also thought it would be a snap. I mean, who can argue with art?
I don't know about the nude thing truthfully but I have found a few models that will experiment for prints or head shots in exchange for their time.
Try a local acting school or dance classes where people need photos and like to be seen. Place a flyer up with a sample or two.

We've got a couple friends whose daughters are aspiring models. We get to shoot them and they get free photos. When the neighborhood girls seen the photos we took, they all volunteered to be models as well. Granted they are all 12-15 so the photos all have to be G rated, it's still great practice.
Note though, be sure one of the parents is always there just so no one can ever accuse you of anything...
Edit to add, we give them them the edited digital file to print as much as they want. It's free to us and a worth while trade for the practice, plus they sign a model release. and... they are all friends so I'd never charge them for something like that.

Friends and friends of friends ... you do a good enough job, they'll start calling you, not the other way around. |

Thanks for the input all. The flyer and the friends of friends is probably the way I'll have to go. Just build by word of mouth. |

I was thinking of business cards as well, with a link to some digital port folio (web)... So that you can introduce yourself and simply hand them the card. If they like, they can get back in touch with you.

That is a good idea as well. No pressure and they contact you if they want. |

I know it has been said, but friends. I started taking pictures of my friends and they started hiring me and thier friends starting hiring me! Its been great. Also taking pictures of friend's events.
Lastly, going and taking pictures of strangers performing (usually musicians) and offering them the pictures free for their website in exchange for you getting credit. |

Any time I've ever asked a strange woman on the street to do a photoshoot, she's always agreed.

Do you think that is because of your good looks or your genteel personality?

Probably has something to do with the fact that I have a Nikon.???
edit: oh I should add that while what I stated was 100% true and accurate, it was a bit misleading. The truth is I've never asked a strange woman on the street to do a photoshoot -- so really, I'm zero for zero.

ya i'll have to agree with everyone who said friends. i'm in high school so it's a little different. but the way i started was i took pictures of two female friends. then i'd give them the chopped down files of the shots so that they could put them on myspace. i was lucky that a few really good shots came out. and word got out on myspace that i was some fashion/glamour photographer lol. so this all started 2 months ago. and now i've increased my model arsenal three-fold
im also a member on this fashion forum, //www.duroi.com/fashionforum/
the reason i talked about myspace is that, weird as it may seem. the way a few photographers there find some of their models is through myspace. they know it's very strange too. but come to think of it, that's pretty smart since all the models there are friends with other models and that whole community is pretty tightly knit i believe.

I've never asked a stranger to do a photo shoot, but I have asked numerous people if I could take their picture. Most of them say yes, especially if I give them a card so they can give me their e-mail addy so I can send them a copy of the file. |

I answered this question before in a previous thread, but I'll try to remember what I said. My perspective is from having been the model.
A good place to find models (especially nude) is through the local college or art school. They are usually very comfortable having sat for figure drawing classes. The professors will often put you in touch with their sources.
The friends (as mentioned) are very good.
craigslist.org might not be a bad place either. Almost anyone can be a potential model if you approach it properly. Credibility and professionalism are essential.
The photographers I modeled for had good portfolios to show me and something to barter (prints or photography lessons). I always did it for barter or "pro bono", which brings up the other point...Don't act creepy. The photographers I stopped modeling for were the ones who showed the wrong kind of interest, yuck!
It's always a good idea to ask them to bring a friend along, and try to give them equal attention, even if one is more attractive. You'd be suprised who will pose nude once they've had a chance to relax or have found out their friend did it.
Good luck.

greatandsmall has some very sage advice... I've found the same to be very true in my own modeling experience. (Yes, in my younger days, I did quite a bit of modeling - many, many pounds ago!) And finding someone who is willing to take a journey with you is much more satisfying on a professional level than someone who is in it for the kicks. Just my 2 cents...

I second Craigslist.org! I see posts of models looking for a deal to have their photos taken by new photographers trying to build their portfolio almost every day. Trade/barter for prints. |

This really not to far fetched. I normally walk arounf town with my 20D and kit lens. Most everyone that saw me didn't really show any interest. SOOOOO, I go and buy a vest with big pockets (photog vest), installed the huge white monster (Canon 7-200 f4/L lens), put on my sunglasses and what a difference. Now everyone I walk by stops and smiles, more people wave when I start taking pics and several people have been more than helpful posing for "journalist" pics. If you look professional then the public treat you better. Oh ya ... maybe putting clean pants and shirt and washing my face helped ;)

I didn't see this mentioned yet, but there are a number of websites that try to hook photographers up with models. I'll warn you in advance that you'll bump into some pretty slimy stuff on any of these sites but there is also a good chance that you will find some new models who are willing to trade their time for prints for images on a CD (TFP/TFCD). I have found a couple of models that are very good (Jess and Desiree in my portfolio) using these sites.

Dont go straight for the nudes. And dont call them nudes, try Glamour. Make sure to let them know you expect them to bring a friend so they will be more comfortable. heck then you have 2 models.

I found a few models by placing an ad in the local Independant newspaper. At the time it was the SLWeekly. I simply stated what I was looking for and what I was offering as far as prints/cd.
When someone would call I would offer to meet with them and discuss what I wanted to shoot, as well as show them some of my work.
It seemed to work out quite well. Now I use Onemodelplace, but alot of people don't bother to return emails so be prepared.
