Canon 85mm 1.8, Canon 100mm 2.0
Could those that have either of these 2 lenses commment on the pros and cons of each. Also if you have some examples of shots taken with either, could you post the link, please?
Thanks!

85/1.8 - VERY sharp, fast focus, little bit too telephoto for portraits other than head shots. GREAT for indoor sports (most sports photog's swear by them). Nice bokeh. Apparently the lens suffers somewhat from CA [Ed: I couldn't remember what kyebosh had said], but I've never encountered any myself.
- 85 + extension tube
Ed: I meant CA, not flare

I have neither, but you hear about the 100mm a lot less than the 85mm. The reason for this is that they're almost the same lens, i've heard the 85 is barely sharper, probably unnoticable most of the time, and that the 85 is also cheaper. The other reason the 100mm often doesn't get much to it's name is because of the 135L 2.0 which is probably one of canon's best lenses. Again, they're pretty much sister lenses, so either one is great, but if price matters at all get the 85 to save a bit. If price doesn't matter, the L lens is in it's own league. I'll look for a shootout which I read before...
Here's the article that addresses all 3 lenses I mentioned.

Have you seen the CA problems? I've heard it's one of the worst for that.

I generally use it indoors, so I've not noticed, to be honest. I have taken the odd shot outside, and I can't say I've noticed.
Ed: I meant CA in my post, btw, not flare

Both with the 85 f1.8

The 85's a great lens. I haven't used the 100 f/2, but either way on its own the 85 holds itself as a great lens. The contrast is great, the USM fast, and it is incredible sharp from about f/3.5 and on.
Here are some of my own samples with the 85.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I love my 85 1.8. I bought it last winter and used it a lot for indoor sports, mainly basketball. It was supposed to be a stepping stone to the 135 2L but I don't feel the need for that upgrade much any more. It taught me about, and sold me on, the usefulness of fast aperture lenses. IMHO, the value for the dollar you get with this lens is outstanding. Here are a few of my shots taken with it.

I was trying to make the same decision between the 85 and the 100, and I finally decided on the 85. And I'm not regretting it one bit. It's sharp as a knife, I haven't seen the least bit of CA, and I can use it in low light situations.
This was shot with the 85.

looking at a resized picture that most likely has had a decent amount of editing done, doesn't really show much of what the lens can do. Keep that in mind while you're looking at entries.

Here's a high quality review of the 85mm lens
//www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_85_18/index.htm
seems very sharp.
Never even heard of the 100mm f2

Thanks!
The 100mm f2 is an older but apparently very trustworthy lens that is now discontinued by Canon. I've read some reviews and all are very favorable. It seems to be a descision based on focal length since the quality of these are so similar.

are you looking for used? I don't know about resale values of both of these lens. Then once again, it comes to price, the intended use you have for it, and whether you can find it or not.
good luck

Yes, I have a line on the 100mm used, supposed to be in excellent, like new, condition. If I want to sell it later, I think I can get my money back. I've read quite a few reviews over the past 2 days comparing the 85 mm and 100mm and people that have them rate them as very good.

If the price looks good, then it looks like a good buy. As for me, I've too many lenses already. Only have one prime, the thrifty fifty. I really would like a 20mm f1.4 from Sigma and Maybe a Sigma/Tamron/Canon 100mmish Macro down the road, but that's it, I swear...

Seems like a lot of you have compared the 85 1.8 to the 100 f2.0, but I was wondering if anyone could additionally comment on the difference to the 100mm 2.8 macro? It doesn't seem like it is that much more expensive for a really powerful lens.
This seems like the right place to ask as the original poster might be interested too... sorry about the hijack :) |
