Well, Ralph; the idea, at least in my case, was to SEPARATE fact from fantasy by going to the "source". Be kind of interesting...

Hey Ralph,
Go look at some James Nachtwey, Robert Capa, Matt Herron, Sebastian Selgado, W. Eugene Smith, Donna Ferrato and Joachim Ladefoged...then tell me that Hollywood has anything on these guys and girls reporting everyday life in sometimes exotic and sometimes mundane locations and conditions. |

There are several countries in Asia, Africa and South America where you can still find these conditions. Not the stuff of history but everyday hard reality. Perhaps it would be good if more photographers/journalists paid attention to those situations. But people probably don't want to hear and see it.

Somewhere buried in some boxes I have a photo I took of the first moon landing (or the TV view of it anyway). |

There are plenty of places in the United States to see this today.

And plenty of journalists covering those situations all over the world. The problem is, many would rather know when the Olsen twins turn 18 and whether Michael Jackson was found guilty or not...it makes Darfur seem further away and dying refugees seem less human.

Without a doubt I would go back to July 1, 2, & 3rd and the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. I know that 1 gig card would fill up quickly...can I have two? :-D

but people were not pointing out everyday life - they were hunting for 'cusps' of history - which have been made up or glorified over the last 50+ years of mass media -
If you really want to hunt down good myths - try Valhalla or Greek - now thouse would be interesting to photograph ;)

I'd be happy with going back to the 20s,30s or 40s and hanging around a railroad yard or station all day. I'd love to get some pictures of the old steamers in action.

This train runs out of Tacoma in the Winter, and near Mt. Rainier in the Summer.

My picks of historical moments to photograph
1)Explosion of the first death star
2)When Frodo and company first hid from the Ring Wraiths
3)The secret meeting between the Doors and Pink Floyd where they decided to set the bar lower for classic rock everywhere
4) When Indiana Jones had a fist fight with that big dude, and he, like, fought him until the propeller, like, diced him up real good.
5) Oh, and one of those bible things would be fun too. |

That was Benjamin Franklin. And he survived, and went on to invent the lightning rod, so countless others survived too. |

The Immaculate Conception
edit: oh, and by the way the origianl question was:
"Pick one event back in time that you could attend and be the official photographer for... What and when would it be, and what would be the goal for the photo you hoped to capture..."

When the Oracle at Delphi was up and running.
Hmmm, what would happen if you and your camera and your gig card arrived and the event wasn't there? |
