I will go out on a limb and say that instead of spending time reading any book to figure out what settings and why, EXPERIMENT like crazy. Take tons of pictures at all different settings. Use various lighting situations...available light, direct light, back light, full sun, low light, halogen, incandescent, you name it, try it. Try all kinds of apertures and shutter speeds. You will soon understand the WHY when you see each resulting image. I believe in "baptism by fire" and the only way to really gain a clear understanding of how your equipment works (and why) is to use it. Good luck!!! :)

Every book has a different writing style so you need to pick one that is in a style that you feel you can learn from.
Also, before looking at books make a list of what you want to learn. If you want to learn about the basics then a book that just covers the basics may be a good start.
One book that I have that was used in a continuing ed class I took is called 'SHOOT! Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About 35mm Photography'. Yes, it's written with a slant towards film however once you get past the section on film choice it all basically applies to digital as well. It covers the basics as well as different types of subjects, lighting etc.
I say take a couple of hours, pull a few books of the the shelf that seem to contain the info your looking for and browse. You'll find in a very short time which books appeal to you and which ones don't.

I agree with Laurie and Colette. I have read a few books but I just could not grasp it. the one book that did help was on composition and taking a different view of your subject that people normally dont look at that subject.
experiment and pratice with help you get a better understanding of lighting and exposure control.
If you can go to an area of you city/town that has a nice sky line. get there about 45 minutes before sunset (sun at your back) and shoot the sky line. adjust the shutter speed and look at the differance.
same goes for indoor shots. get a flower in a vase and a simple desk lamp or a cheap clamp light. set it up and just keep changing the light angle and shutter speed and apeture. also some black or white poster board for a back ground will help hout also.
this I feel will be the best learning you will get.

For a start I think you can search online and learn about Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO. Once you understand them and the relationship between them, you'd know that getting the exposre right is just like filling a glass of water. Beyond that is upto your imagination. |
