About 2 month ago I went to a motard concentration near my home. My objective was to train a bit for portraits and event photos, and for portfolio images. I called the organization and asked if they have hired someome for the job and if I could go there. The man in charged said that they didn't have a photographer but they didn't want to hire one, but I could go on my own, they would give me a pass. So I went. Many people there asked me for the photos and I decided to put a web gallery for people to buy if they wanted (only did I sell actually). The people in the organization where very frinedly and put me at ease, letting me go where I wanted and colaborated a lot.
The next day I was seaching the web for something and I see a moto magasine. I email them if they where interested in the photos. I said I would give them if they put my name on it, and so I did. They did a 2 pages article with my photos, although my name only apeared in small font in one photo. After that I was shooting another motard concentration where a friend of mine was going to play music with his band and I wanted to do some shoots for them. I emailed the magasine again and they said they where also interested in the photos. This time I also wrote a small text to do an article and it will be printed with the photos in the next edition (next week). But the better part is that in the second concentration there where a guy who is atarting a new magazine. We talked a bit and I gave him my card and told him that I would give them the photos in the same conditions. Today he phoed me to meet me to talk about it. He invited me to work as a permanet colaborator to do photjornalistic cover of the motard concentration gatherings.
This is not a payed job, besides the expenses for the car and so on. But my name will show in the editorial sheet has a permanent colaborator with a photo of me. So no money but lots of exposure and liberty to shoot at will and to write also the article that goes with the photos. I'm not ritcher than I was this morning but my ego is flying high.
Sorry for the long post. Jus had to share my happyness.

Sorry, my english is not the besto, so sometimes I have some dificulties in making me clear. The motard (motorbikes) clubs organize once a year a gathering (hope it's the correct word) where people from the other clubs meet. It has got music, food and drink and a lot of people having fun. Like a big party for motorbikers. Hope this sounds more like it. :)

Congrats, but please please realize that your photos have value and you should be paid for them.
I'll shut up now. |

i think nuno not only knows the value of his photos, but also the value of LOTS of exposure. sometimes, you just can't put a value on getting great exposure. when someone reads the magazine, they don't know that those great photos were not paid for--they just see great photos. and the next time they see nuno with his camera, they'll know he takes magazine quality photos, and they will pay him to take theirs. sometimes, starting out, you have to find other ways than cash to get paid. |

You're right skiprow. For know theres to things to it: first that someone thinks that my photos are qualaty enough for putting them in to their magazine, and secondly because I'll get a lot of exposure. Me and a friend have a partime business for shooting social events to pay equipment and at the magazine it will be posted my name and a web site, so it's free publicity also. But I love this kind of photojornalistic work and I would do it for free if I had too, just to get portfolio and experience. And I also get to keep the rights of the photos, and still sell them if someome is interested in them.
