I just got my mom into DPC.
She really wants to do this as a hobby as she is retired.
So, being the great son I have decided to buy her a new camera.
Digital SLR out of the question as I cant my mom using a better camera than me :)
So can someone, maybe some Moms out there, suggest a camera for someone who wants to particpate in the Open Challenges.
The features I can current guess her camera needs are:
Flash
Different Modes - P, AV, TV, Auto, Macro
Decent Opitcal Zoom
Easy to use ( i dont want to turn into Mr. Support)
Thanks |

Try this one! I have two friends that have this camera and they love it. The images are unreal too! My wife is jealous and would kill for one right now, but I have to get out of school first. |

I got my husband this camera:
lumix
It got pretty good ratings, good price, 5MP, IS, decent zoom... Great for someone who likes point and shoot. And - it takes AA batteries - my husband's favorite feature.

I think the Kodak is a very newbie friendly camera with some good functions that can be grown into as she gains/wants more creativity.

I used a Kodak DX 6490 for the past year and loved it... Very easy to use and good picture quality. I "upgraded" to a Canon 350d Rebel XT last week and still use the Kodak when I want to take an easy shot. |

Canon S70.
Small enough to slip into a pocket, almost all the features of the G6.

Not even something like a Canon Digital Rebel or Nikon D70? What is she looking for, specifically? And what do you consider decent for optical zoom? 2x? 4x? 8x? 12x? |

Ditto. Also check out the S1 IS if money is a problem and memory. I was going to buy the S2 until they announced it used SM )I think) Either way it didn't use CF cards so I stayed away.
S2IS - 5MP 12X Optical Zoom about $500
S1IS - 3.2MP 10X Optical Zoom about $300 |

The Finepix S series (S3000, S5000, S7000) makes a good learner camera (for me anyway!). The automatic stuff is pretty smart, and it has manual focus if ya want, and Aperture, Shutter and Program priority modes. With the 10X digizoom (on my s5000) it's good for close-ups too.

Yes the S5000 is a very good camera. I learned a lot from mine. Sell mine 2 weeks though to get money for a Sigma 105mm macro, but I miss it already. Not a camera to slip im to a pocket but it makes very good photos.

I started on the canon A75 I think they go up to A90 or something like that. It is a reasonably priced P&S camera with all the great features you mention. |

I would say this one as well. I have it on my wish list....something to keep in the jockeybox or my purse when I don't want to bring my rebel. |

I agree. My mom has an A80 and it works great for her. They're up to A95 now, which is a 5mp but still around $250. |

There is also a A520 (?) in the line as well. I third the Canon Power shot A75/A85/A95 series. Have the A70 which I still love and adore, but it's discontinued for the A75 and the A520 or whatever it is. |
