Out of curiosity, if we shoot RAW + jpg, create our submission from RAW, and are asked to validate the shot, can we submit the jpg simultaneous capture for validation purposes? It's quite a bit smaller, so faster to upload.

We usually like to request the RAW file for validation purposes, as extracting the jpeg often tags the EXIF I believe.

u don't have to extract the jpg.. it would be sent to u as a jpg.. the 20d creates a raw and a jpg rather than embedding it in the raw file.

how about submitting a small jpeg straight from the raw converter? That way I can send a 100k file instead of 4mb over dialup...

That's what I mean; I'm looking at the EXIF and it seems to be a distinct entity, simultaneously created. It will never have been opened or touched by any editing software. The thing of it is, if this is a verifiable image, then one can shoot in RAW + jpg small and have a REALLY transportable validation image, if one's a dialup type. No problem for me, I'm broadband. And consider that this file would be sufficent for date and time verification, and for general overview; if there were serious editing questions that for some reason required the full RAW file (and I can't imagine what they'd be offhand), then SC could always message back and request that file in a specific case.

As Setz posted, if the RAW and JPG are written separately by the cam, then either is a valid original. The only bump in the road, so to speak, might be if exposure is pulled down in the RAW conversion, holding highlight detail not present in the JPG. If this winds up having an impact on validation, then the RAW might be required. I would think that would be a rare occurence.
If, however, the JPG is embedded in the RAW file, and extracted by the RAW converter, it will bear the marks of the conversion software, and can no longer be validated as an unedited original.

I don't participate in many challenges but I' wondering if the XMP files from adobe would probably offer more detailed info because they can be tagged with the submitted jpg, am I off?

The answer is yes. In the case of RAW + JPEG, submitting the JPEG is fine. To answer Gil's question, although we look at the XMP info, the rules require original EXIF data for validation.

Oh, sure no problem but my question was more of an informative one, since XMP provides complete and detailed infor of everything that was ever done to the shot...would it not be the ultimate validation tool "of the futur" ?

With the 10D would both a RAW and JPEG show up in the PS browser? I'm only see the RAW file in PS.

The 10D embeds the JPEG within the RAW file, as opposed to writing separate files.

Oh. I could have sworn I use to see both. Weird. Thanks, though! :-)
