Getting back on-topic, I don't see a problem with this. As artyste says, this is a dynamic site and we are all (hopefully) dynamic people. I regularly purge images from my portfolio to make room for others, and a lot of THOSE are images I worked on for other people so they are leaving holes in old "instructional" threads, but it can't be helped.
Of course, most of my images that have been faved are challenge entries, so they will stay regardless. I think the most faves I have for a non-challenge entry is 4... Bottom line is, I'll run out of space if I don't prune regularly, so that's the way it has to be.
Robt.

I don't see any problem with cleaning the portfolio whenever you feel it is necessary. If there are favs that you are truly worried might disappear and you can no longer view, why not ask the photog to sell you a print? Chances are they even have the print for sale through DPC Prints.
I only have 6 or 7 of my images marked as favs by folks - but then I am just learning and am shocked to have even that many. I will not delete favs as long as I have space available. I do delete stuff which leaves holes in forum threads - but not until I figure the thread is dead anyhow or that my image no longer helps the thread any. If I ever do get to be the caliber of some of our best here, then I am sure I would delete favs too as space would become limited in my portfolio. I would probably contact folks who have them marked as favs first though and give them a heads up.

this is probably the most aptly named thread in a while...
faves just happen to the the big coin here in dpc-land, with comments being the little coin. those little clicks are how we all buy and sell our approval and disapproval of others and ourselves.
why?
probably because it's one of the only things we can control (seeing that the big dollar coin - scores - are completely beyond most of our control).
of everything i've read, i like sdw's approach the best: simply tuck them away for those who 'bought' them to enjoy them, but leaving them out of sight. |

For the longest time I was worried about someone deleting a picture I had selected as a fav, so I only selected challenge entries. Now I have become less anal and select all the ones I like. If the photographer feels it's time to move on and change their portfolio, I don't think I have a right to call them rude. Maybe they will be adding some more pictures that will be even better than the previous ones. |

I thought if the images or folder was hidden (workshop for sure) the images wouldn't be visible to anyone other than the person that owns them?

No, they don't appear in your porfolio, but people can see them if they know the image number--e.g., if you post it in a thread. And once people have them favorited, they can still get to them.
Regarding the general getting "favs" discussion, to me favs are like someone buying a print--without the money. I get a feeling for what's liked. When someone removes a favorite choice, it's kind of like they returned the print! You kind of want to know which one it is and why they didn't like it. But in this last case, where I lost three, I can't even figure out which ones were dropped. To me that's useful (if not "sad") information, but I can almost never tell which (though with three, I suspect someone dropped all their favorites). |

No, they are still available for view but if you go to the persons profile you will not be able to see them. Since the person has it check as a favorite it goes directly to the photograph. Like in my my profile, my stats chart and bell curve cart are pictures that are in a hidden folder and cannot be seen in my profile.

Oh. I forgot. I think what everyone is experiencing here is a website purge. I think the same thing happened last year. All the inactive members information is purged from the database. If you look up some members, you will see "no known contact e-mail". I think when that happens, their favorites are removed. And I think it happens on a somewhat regular basis either every 6 months or yearly. |
