I have the opportunity to upgrade from my 300D to a 20D... would like input.... if you had the opportunity to do the same... would you and why.... all input appreciated. Anyone who has done this and your thoughts since the switch would be great.
Im happy with the 300D... would I be happier with the 20D.... trying to justify the expense.

Haven't had a 300D, but I sure would upgrade if you could! Couldn't be happier to use a 20D, I love it!

Do the side by side comparison on DPReview. For the limitations of the 300D, are they limitations for you? Would the improvements provided by the 20D help you overcome these limitations?
300D - lack of control over exposure and focus mode since the camera chooses these automatically depending on shooting mode
20D - full control over exposure and focus modes
That limitation on the 300D is why I bought my 10D instead of the 300D (20D wasn't out yet). It may not be an issue with you.

Do it. You'll be thrilled. I had a 300D and moved to the 350D (I also use a 20D at the office). The startup speed, lower noise and burst speed are all a HUGE improvement over the 300D, and you'll have all the additional features that were absent or disabled from the 300D. If you upgrade, there is NO WAY you'll regret it.

Answer this: What limitations have you run into with the 300D that the 20D would remove?

I think you'll find that the 20D is much faster in many ways, from start-up to shutter lag to burst shooting. And it's more versatile because of more control and the very usable ISO up to 1600 and beyond. My vote would be to jump.

I think the shutter lag and burst shooting has convinced me!
Thank you all who have replied.... reading the dpreview was great too!

You should determine if your 300d is meeting your needs. If it is not, identify the specific areas where it's not and then see if the 20d will resolve those shortcomings.

I agree 100%. If the 300D is meeting your needs, use the money to buy a nice lens. Is there a lens that could meet your needs more than a body upgrade?

Not to mention that the write speed on the 300D is hardly impressive by any means. I hate waiting for my RAWs to save before I can shoot more and/or preview them.
edit: but John's advice is certainly sound.. which is why I continually buy new lenses rather than upgrade my camera - I'd much rather have those :P

What do you use it for? I recently started shooting events and a wedding or two - so i have noticed the shortcomings of the rebel (start up speed, FEC, low light focus/focus accuracy for starters). I installed the hack which helped some (FEC, RAW in auto modes, some custom functions).
If it was just a hobby camera, no problems. As a tool for a job, the 300D lacks. A 20D is on my list..saving up and hoping for a 30D to be released..then have to decide on it or a dicsounted 20D....the decisions never end!

I have started doing freelance work.... just shot a gym for brochures and corporate marketing sales.... also starting to shoot seniors and will be helping an established photographer with weddings.... so I think the camera and some lenses will be in order... not happy with the current tameron zoom that I have.... looking at an IS lens...

Unless there is something specific about the 20D you need over the 300D, I wouldn't upgrade and put the money in lens. You'll probably get more out of your images with a really good lens then a new camera body. If you NEED 8MP, or faster buffer or fps, then it's another story.
I'd recommend cosidering either a Canon EF 16-35 f2.8L or a Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS/non IS for fast indoor lenses if you plan on doing weddings. Both are over a grand. I think a 300D armed with one of those lenses will do better than a 20D with the kit lens or the consumer Tamron you are currently not happy with, then as you get more work and money, upgrade to a 20D or a 30D (20D replacement).
