if anyone has some spare time. i want to do something in photoshop to resemble this
but with a photo of a person. that pic is just an example. i want to do it more like one of those religious icon candles. not so much on a candle but like a rectangular frame with the photo inside. if anyone can help get me started or point me in the right direction id really appreciate it! im not an expert by any means with PS but i can usually play around and get decent results. but im having problems with layers and making halos and the background how i want it.

thanks
chris

Can you explain exactly what you want? The haloes and BG gradient are easy enough, the background texture is more difficult, I'm not sure excatly what you want for a frame.

Do you want the subject rendered as a line drawing like that? There are photoshop filters that can accomplish that.

For the halo, open imge, create duplicate layer from Background. Turn that layer off so it's not visible. Revert to BG layer, create new layer with solid color fill of your choice. Fade that layer to 50% or less so you can see the BG layer through it. Use the drawing tools to draw a circle and stroke it to width and color of your choice. Bring the layer back to 100% opacity and adjust it so the halo/BG look right.

Click the duplicate layer visible again. Select out the subject, and invert & delete the selection. You'll now see the subject superimposed on the halo layer with the plain color BG.

That's your starting point, quick 'n dirty.

Give it a whack then post the original and the composite, and I'll take a try at it if need be. Good luck.
