The 828 is not a single lens reflex camera, hence it is not a DSLR.

I thought that with the 828 you look through the lens as you would with a 300d or 10d etc?

An SLR means there is a moving mirror involved, as so:

The 828 doesn't have this design. In fact, I believe what you see in the viewfinder is actually digitally produced? EVF?

Yeh I know about slr's :-p

I did not realise that the 828 had an electronic viewfinder.

thanks

I think that "getting" into the developpement of dSLR at this point...is like telling the fireman who's holding the hose that the building is on fire.

THe F828, if it's anything like the F717 that I had, mimics the feel of looking through the viewfinder.. you get to see the image through a viewfinder and it certainly is easier to see than most P&S viewfinders.. but still not exactly the same thing.

As the owner of an F828 I can categorically state that it is not a dslr :) but with 8mpixels, ttl hotshoe flash and 58mm diameter carl Zeiss 28-200 equiv lens, I'd be hard pressed to call it a p&s. You can look through the evf (the small tv) or the really nice and big lcd (the big tv).
I also own the 20D, or rather, it owns me. I did my second paying job this weekend, Had the 20D with 70-300 over the left shoulder, and f828 over the right shoulder. (I felt a bit like something from the matrix).
The f828 is extremely capable, but it really doesn't come close to the 20D. Looking through the Sony evf, and one second later the Canon viewfinder, you really learn to appreciate the dslr pentaprism. And the ISO, and the CMOS sensor, and the....

I wanted to hold out on getting a dslr untill I knew what Sony was replacing the F828 with, but I don't regretting getting the 20D one bit.

Oops, I guess the common term is "Prosumer".. which is certainly more fitting given its array of features. The only thing I miss about my 717 is the rotating back that would let me see the LCD screen from above or below the camera.
