Very good and not too expensive...Not really possible to give an explanation that would make them sound as good as they are. I'll be happy to bring and prepare them if our organizers think this is the appropriate directions to go...I really don't want to step on toes here. Just happy to be getting together...food or not.

Thank you Clara & Di & all!
I will be driving up from near Roanoke, VA early early Saturday morning and staying through the night shoot, leaving Sunday morning. If anyone needs a ride between Roanoke, VA & DC, please PM me - I'll happily let you hitch one with me.
Thanks again to everyone coordinating this - I'm really looking forward to it, as this will be my 1st DPC GTG!

Originally posted by blemt: Okay- the long awaited schedule. :) Due to the number of people being unable to firmly commit, I had to drop several ideas that required specific permits.
Friday: Arrival Day. No specific shooting plans for the day. Dinner at Steve's at 6pm. I strongly urge everyone get there earlier. Driving 270 at rush is just not fun. Dinner concludes at 9.
Saturday: We have three planned AM events starting at 9am.
1) National Zoo
2) National Mall area (Smithsonian, Monuments durning Day)
3) Downtown DC (A walkaround the DC metro area exploring various nooks and crannies. Includes the Navy Memorial, White House, Ford's Theater)
Everyone gets to pick one from the menu. :) Remember that Saturday is going to be a very, very long day. The AM event will end by 2pm. From 2 until 5:30 I STRONGLY urge naptime. If you miss naptime I'm gonna have no sympathy for you at 3am. :)
Meet back up at 6:00 PM at Metro Center station. Walk down to the Mall area for twilight/later afternoon shooting.
Dinner at Union Station at 9:00 PM at Uno.
Night shoot starting at 11:00pm. We will break back into our three groups- this allows us to rotate through all memorials without having 40 of us with tripods around to annoy Park Police.
1) Jefferson Memorial
2) World War 2 Memorial
3) FDR Memorial
These are the ones we are hitting first. All three turn lights off around 1am. After 1am, we will rotate down to Vietnam, Lincoln, and Korea.
Then sunrise at the memorial of your choice.
Stagger back to hotels/lodgings for sleep. :)
Sunday- Arlington National at 1pm. Cause we are all going to be tired!
We should finish up at Arlington around 3ish.
Sunday night- Clara collapses into a small ball of goo. ;)
As you can see- the schedule is pretty organic. This is done to allow people the chance to explore as they wish. There's also a good bit of downtime built in on purpose. Shooting overnight is hard on the old body. Take advantage of scheduled rest time to do just that. Don't forget it gets beastly hot in DC this time of year. |

My guess is there's a SuperWalmart or similar somewhere between where we're staying and Steve's place...What does everyone think? (Thoughts especially appreciated from Di, Steve and Clara.) |
All sounds good to me... Fried chicken is the current selection for dinner - I will purchase a tub'o'chicken from a great place in Frederick (BTW... no f'burg in MD... just Frederick). There are two Walmarts (standard), 3 Giants, 2 Giant Eagles, and a partridge in a pear tree.
Faidoi... probably, but you'll want to make sure to use 355. 270's no fun to walk.

I got my boss to send me to DC for business on Friday the 29th. That means my transportation is free and I can stay in DC for the weekend.
Anyway, I wanted to find out where the meeting place is on Friday and other days? How will we stay in touch and what is Steve's? Is it a restaurant or DPC member house?
Also, what is everybody doing for sleeping arrangements? What hotels are in the area? Something cheap would be nice. My company's office is on 1401 New York Ave. Is it close to meeting place?
What is NotaCon?
Should I drive or fly in? How is parking in DC?
Anything else I need to know if I want to attend?
I sorry if I'm asking something that was already answered. Those 12 pages discussions are kinda long.
Thanks
Nick

Hey Nick, Cool for you!! Nice to be able to manipulate, uhhhh I mean persuade, your boss into sending you to DC! ;-)
Here is the "Official" hotel that some of the folks will be staying at. Bethesda Hyatt Other locals have offered up rooms and floors to folks but I'm not sure if there's any of that space left. A good person to ask would be Di. :-)
Dinner friday is at Steve's house in Fredricks (sp), MD from around 6-9pm.
They're calling it NotaCon because it's "Not a Convention" ;-) As for the rest I can't really help you as this will be my first time to DC so I'm not familiar with parking, driving, flying .... although there is somewhere in this thread a discussion about which is the best airport to fly into. Maybe a local can help out here. Hope you can make it. :-) You'll probably want to let Di or Clara (blemt) know if you are as I think they are trying to keep a head count.

You can get the "Panda Package" if you book the Bethesda Hyatt...it includes self-service parking. The Hyatt is on the Metro lines. The Metro is a great way to get around in DC. Parking in DC is like most major cities...usually difficult, expensive, or both. :-)

Speaking of which.. what is the head count currently? I vote everyone has to wear nametags the whole weekend with at least first name and username. |

I think I still have semi-official nametag artwork from my first GTG at the Bronx Zoo.

Oh cool!! Should we wear bermuda shorts and sandals with black socks too? :-) Kidding of course, as I'm the worst with remembering names and would really benefit from this. ;-D

I make name tags for events where I work. If I have the list of names, I could make them up. Pin-on plastic holders with (I promise) pretty lettering and graphics. It's an easy thing for me to do and I think it would be a benefit to those of us who are "name challenged".
By the way, I'm bringing the salt potatoes and appropriate accompaniments and a pot to cook them in. (Unless everyone hates salt potatoes...then I'll bring something else.)

I suppose if we were so outfitted there'd be little mistaking those in our group! Could we also add black plastic-rimmed glasses and pocket protectors just to be haute coutre? :-)

I can bring:
watermelon
soda
bottled water
chips and dip
any other requests
Also, I will be driving in to DC with a cooler of water/soda and a power outlet if anyone needs an emergency recharge.
And you can throw any crap you like in my car... be reasonable! :)

I hope to high heavens that the weather is better on the 29th-31st. It has been absolutely brutal of late. I've been working a night shift recently. When I go outside for my lunch at 3 AM it is around 85 and so humid it almost looks like a fog.
All my black sox are knee highs. Hope that's ok, lol. Or, if the weather doesn't break by then, I may want to go barefooted.
