I have enjoyed looking at your architectural pictures and commenting; I have already learned from Robert's and everyone else's ideas and suggestions. Am going to try to take more this week.

I don't think you are being negative at all, Briphoto! This is what we are here for; constructive criticism. Keep it coming!

Thanks for the information. And yes, I really need to practice my perspective. Banmorn gave a nice example of how to make it better too. But I haven't had time to try to duplicate it yet.

edited to get rid of a redundant "Alice" (and now I've put it back in.)

Thanks to thos e who have left comments on my picture! I went out today to shoot some more and it rained before I could even power on the camera. But, I was thinking was I was driving.... and I wanted to ask the group - Do you ever experience hesitation about taking a picture of a building? It could seem to most - a suspicious activity. I was trying to taking a picture of the back of an old brick building with a really cool fire escape and the owner came running around the building telling me he had called the police. Next thing I knew I heard all these sirens. No, I later found out, they weren't coming for me. None the less it scaried me. I am interested to know how you deal with this situation.

That picture I have is one of many from the backs of buildings in a shopping center. I'm only 15, so I would look suspicious, but no one said anything.

Usually when I'm taking photos, as long as I'm not doing anything illegal, or something I know for sure offends, I don't worry about it until somebody says something. The only time I've been stopped is when I pointed my telephoto lens at a Stealth fighter/bomber (understandable).

I picked up my sister at SeaTac airport yesterday. Took my camera and there was lots to shoot, but I was kinda paranoid about security. I could've asked, but I thought that might even be more suspicious. I must just be plagued with a guilty conscience. ;-)

One good thing about living in a 'tourist city' is that there are lots of cameras, everywhere. And I look about as harmless as they come; another plus. Finally, when possible, I use a point 'n shoot downtown. Then, if someone asks (or is about to ask) what I'm doing, I'd preempt with "gee, that's an exceptionally beautiful fire escape, did you see those shadows, and how about that pigeon sitting on the sill...I hope you don't mind if I try to get it" (You get the idea)

I have done this with some success, but of course, if they call my bluff, I'd slink away and find another fire escape...

But, seriously, it might be a workable idea to face distrust with openness and good humor and see what happens.

I was out today and drove by these buildings, so naturally, some photos were in order. Let me know what you think; here is one:
the other is this one: they were both taken toward evening with cloudy sky.

I really like the one of the mill houses. The post office one doesn't really grab me like the first one does though. Bith are very well done though.

that was quick Jewellian! I tried to move the pics since they were stuck to each other here in the forum..so I added some text to separate the shots..haha. I like the mill houses better, too..there is a nice symmetry to them.

I would tend to agree with sfalice about living in a tourist city. As long as you are on the main drags, you really have little or no problem.
I have been asked to stop about 4 or 5 times. Once I had a jacket on with my company logo on it and the guard sort of backed off as we also had offices in the building I was shooting. That doesn't always work. Prior to the move to our new building, we had a all day management meeting of the two sites that were merging at the new building. I was shooting the building with the foreground of a cherry tree in an area across the street from the building and one of the guardettes came out and starting acosting me about taking a picture of the building. I told her that I was taking a picture of the cherry tree (sort of) and she said now I wasn't and back and forth. During the entire time she had her cell phone in front of her at arms's length like is was a phaser set on stun! Never quite figured out what made her leave but I got the picture I wanted. I now wait til she leaves before I shoot the new building and have had no problems.
Oh yeah, I was shooting the Penna. Convention Center once and was told to stop....hmmmm....taxes, wondering how much I paid for that. I shot it another time with no problem. Another time I was told to stop shooting in the underground area above the Broad Street Subway line due to 09/11 restrictions.
I've read either in the forums here or elsewhere that you should not be worried about shooting on public property. If you are on private property and shooting a private dwelling you should get a release signed after asking permission.

Sorry I have not been by as much as I should but I had a couple of 11-12 hours days yesterday and today and I did not have the time. Should be OK for the time being

Assignment: (ain't it about time!) Macro/micro. Not sure of the name but it was used at another site for an assignment there and I thought the idea would be good for us here. Submit two pictures of architecture of any type. One picture should be as much of the subject in the image as possible. The other should be a detail study of the same subject. For example you could take a picture of a bridge for the first image and a portion, showing a detailed section of the bridge. Let me see if I have an example....be right back.

The first is macro shot of two buildings, Logan II and the Verizon building:

Next, the micro, shows the two buildings together in an abstract:

Not the best example, the two images were taken about 2 weeks apart. But I hope you get the idea. If not post or PM me....have fun and be creative. Try to submit these by Sunday, 07/17. I will post another assignment by Friday night or Saturday AM. Now I gotta get to a couple more of your submissions and than plotz! I'm pooped!

Nice idea for the assignment, makes a lot of sense and should get the creative juices flowing!

My contribution:

As for being confronted and asked to stop, i can't say that sort of thing happens often in Edinburgh. When someone comes to stare at me questioningly though, or looks like they might approach me to ask me to stop, i find the best tonic is to simply turn the camera on them instead. They generally get confused and try to remove themselves from the scene swiftly :)

Edit: bugger, posted this before i read the macro/micro thing... will have one done soon

I had a chance to take a couple of pictures for our first assignment
... the full sized bridge:

and the macro of the steel superstructure: it looks like an erector set.

Here is my assignment. There is a hideous (IMO) Marriott near the Yerba Buena Gardens and across the street is a nice highly reflective Metreon. It was a beautiful day so there I was with my camera.

. .
HOtel & Metreon . Detail #1 .. Detail #2

Tomorrow, I'm wandering off for a few days, but will pick up with this forum as soon as I get back. Many thanks, Banmorn, for taking it on. This 1s a good way to really look at the architecture.

Banmorn made some suggestions on "Detail #2" so I changed the image and yes, I really like it better this way. I also enhanced the color of some of the blue fans to try to keep the composition balanced...

Hi Group,
I don't think I will make this assignment as my family is going on vacation for 10 days. I don't know how long these groups are supposed to last, but if we are still in existence when I return I'll jump back in. If I have internet access and time I will participate while on the road.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian have a great time. Hope you can check in.

Assignment:An architectural comparison image. A combination of two or more buildings or other architecture combined to accentuate the differences in style. Newer versus older works fine as do color contrasts. sfalice's shot for the first assignment works for this. Here are a few from me:

Work within the time frame that is best for you. No real due date. I will try to post another assignment midweek. Have fun!

Sorry I am late to class, but I just found out that I was in this group last night. Soooo, here's a little catch up.

This first assignment:

And the second:

I plan on learning a lot from all of you and promise to never, ever be late to class again.

Whew! I found this assignment to be a bit of a challenge. I just could not get something I was happy with. I finally did aquire the following shots tonight on a spur of the moment road trip. Tell me - what do ya think? Be honest - of course. Since it is late, I am gonna leave feedback tomorrow - I promise

I was wondering that myself, lol. Just getting ready to post my response for the second assignment.

I found a good example for the next assignment, but I couldn't decide which would be best, sooooo, here are three different perpectives on the same buildings:

Although it isn't part of the assignment, I am including this one also. I just thought it was a good shot and I wanted to see what you guys thought.
