Hi! Well I had to get out of the city for a bit today and am just now getting back. I have some dahlias I need to shoot before they wilt away and some other work to do for other sites (picking, processing, entering....aHHHHHHHH and trying to avoid the update key....prayers for that reason would be great!) So I will prepare something and post later today....much later....like after midnight. But if you have a recent image in your portfolio and would like to post it for group analysis, which might be the way I think we may go...please do. I will also be thinking of some assignments to undertake so, I guess, your first is an free study of any architecture. Abstracts are fine. I do not know what everyones schedule is, but I am off tomorrow and that will help get some more ideas together for this.
Oh if you are still interested in joining this or any other group....I do not think they have been cut off yet? I'll check and see.....Well We are trying to keep the groups small so a couple or three more in this group should be fine. You will have to find out from the others. I have a PM from someone and that's fine and I will have them PM aboutimage to be added to the master list. Anyone else PM me.
Oh Kenny is on this? All right!! OK Kenny you have one special ground rule....No Godzillas eating the pretty buildings....bad Kenny!

What the---? Am I late? Guess not. Whew! Um, ok when is our first assignment due? And it was... let me check my notes... Oh yes, "Take a picture of Godzilla destroying a building." :P
Kidding. I'll be good. Looks like a great group of people and an excellent mentor. Looking forward!

Ok - here's one I took a week or so ago. A new 16 screen theater at the mall. The building is pretty cool looking. I don't know that much about architectural styles, but I would think it is art-nouveau. I did get some suggestions to shoot it from some more unique angles - I will se about doing that. Meantime, let me know what you think of the shot (in this thread, no need to leave comments on the photo).

Ken,
I don't know much about architectural styles either, that's a subject we need to address in this thread. The more we know about our subject, the better our photos will be. My first impressions of the photo- nice building, but(there's always that "but"), I didn't like the lighting esp. on the right side of the building with the big signs. It just looks dull in contrast to the nice bright sunshine on some of the other parts of the building. Maybe that is something to try to emphasize (the brightly lit portions)? |

Thanks Brian. I see what you are saying. I took the shot around sunset and the building faces north - so I am not sure if it will ever get hit directly. Your feedback is much appreciated.

I think I've got about three architectural shots on my computer, as they come out confused and muddled.
This is one that got by my self-censureship:
Have at it!

Hi....sorry to be gone so long. I finally get some needed rest...Oy!
I posted a comment on yours, Ken! Great building.
I will post on yours as welll before I go, Alice.
The group is growing a bit which is nice to see and I think the number we have now is a good size.
So let me reiterate the first assignment since it sort of got jumbled into the midst of my first post. Submit an architecture image to the thread. Anything you want and abstracts are just fine if you want to got that way. Comparison shots also work well. What I would like to get from this is your take of shooting architecture. Given any photographic subject, it is always interesting to see what people come up with just like in any challenge. I will comment and urge everyone else to comment on the image, it is great to get ideas from all so we can all learn.
Here is a recent one from me.
Any ideas, suggestions or comments are welcome.
I would like to end the first assignement by Wed. and will post another by then. If someone is not able to post to this or any assignement due to time constraints that is fine. Just keep participating in commenting and viewing the others work. Perhaps I will post several assignments at once since, if you're like me and shoot mostly on weekends then you can work on several at once for future assignment submissions. If this is OK let me know.
Also since this is a new thing for me, I am open to any suggestions that you may have for an assignment or the process. Thanks!

I left comments on Ken's photo.
With Alice's photo, I think there are a few possibilities there. Rob mentions the one to the left of the clock - I think there may also be something with the taller building to the right.
As far as Rob - I am just so envious of you living in such a photogenic city. Every time I am there it doesn't seem like I take enough pictures. Do you think there is another city that compares?
Here is my submission . One of my personal favorites that is immediately available in my portfolio. |

OK I'm in cool :)
At the moment I seem to be drawn more to the abstract in architecture
this is an out take for the "architecture II" challenge
it is the inside of the roof of the train station a Sydney Olympic park
this is the one I entered
not sure I entered the right one ?
off to comment on the ones already posted

I think getting in close and personal with this building will get some great shots....1/4 arch with one of the curved design panels....top 1/3 of one of the towers with the rings... the curved roof over the stairs
as this shot stands I'm distracted by the car park underneath as it is dark with just a few lights and I'm looking for something in there... possibly crop or clone out the lights.
This would look great right on dusk when the lights are on but there is still light in the sky that way the inside of the arch would be lit up and draw you into the shot

I have a couple of pictures; one was taken for the Fantasy challenge and the other was one of many I took of the interesting architectural elements of these buildings. |

Alice | I do really like this photo. Just a few comments on what I noticed. One issue could be a thread in itself - Perspective. I'm sure everyone here notices how buildings "lean" when shot from different angles. There are two good ways to deal with this that I know of - 1. Photoshop "Transform" , or 2. A PC (Perspective Correction, I think) lens. The "leaning" isn't always a bad thing, and many perfectly acceptable photos include it, some even taking advantage of it. It's just necessary in architectural photography to be aware of it and adapt accordingly. My other comment on your photo, Alice, is that the bottom part distracts a little. Sorry to sound negative, as all I've done is state what I think is wrong. I like the buildings, the sky, and the signage ("Port of San Francisco"). |

A bit of a mundane subject shot, but could be good for an album cover. Interesting colors - post-proc'd?

I did some levels, burning, and dodging, but the rest is natural light. |
