I guess this could be connected with the idea of two challenges... but it isn't really as this would not be meant for every week.
I think it would be interesting to have a some sort of 'Bonus Challenge' every two weeks or so (or less, but once and a while) that is aimed at different groups with open subjects. They would still have one week of voting, and to take the picturtes. These would be meant to give smaller groups a chance to work among themselves, yet not exclude people (well technically) because the regular challeneg would still exist.
Some suggestions would be: Children's Bonus Challenge - This challenge would exclude people over a certain age and let the younger users of this site compete against each other.
Winner's Bonus Challenge - This would be a challenege for all those who have won here at DPChallenge. Would be interesting IMO to see this.
Novice Bonus Challenge - Some sort of challenge that was for people new to photography, perhaps excluding people who have finished in the top 25% in any challenge.
Photoshop Masters Bonus Challenge- A Challeneg for all those Phtotshop guru's out there that removes all photoshop restrictions.
Anyway thought this might be something interesting, perhaps the ribbons could have a little 'B' on them showing they are from a Bonus Challenge. |

I think all of these have merits for sure...
As for the photoshop masters challenge, i'm not so sure.. I don't have anything against photoshop editing, but I think that digital art and digital photography are two different things. I enjoy looking at some digital art sometimes, but, even if it starts out as a photograph, I don't consider it a photo after certain things are done to it in photoshop.
Since this site is 'digital photography' oriented, IMO, digital art doesn't really fit in. I have seen lots of challenge entries here that have made legal modifications that, in my opinion, change the image into digital art. I have yet to score one of them well... just my opinion though...

Ah, the thin line of what goes beyond photography into digital manipulation. I am not good at photoshop so most of the things most people do here every week are beyond me, and sometimes make me wonder if it is good photography or good photoshop. Even more when I look at some of the 'How did they do that?' and see the before and after versions.
Anyway, the original idea stands, even without the Photoshop challenge. |

I don't have any problem with photoshop edits as long as the result still looks like a photograph. When it goes way beyond that, I start to ask myself questions...

I know a really good photographer who as won many awards in his class, who stated to me about 2 years ago that digital would never replace real photography. Funny thing is, he just bought a computer and all the software to do his work through Photoshop as opposed to using his darkroom. Just goes to show that times change. Some of the things that we used to believe were against convention are now used everyday. I agree that a photo should look as if it came straight out of the camera however in time everyone will be using PS7 or its equivelant on a regular basis. Who said the camera never lies:-)

There are lots of types of photography that are not ready to be replaced by digital yet. Some of these modes, such as medium format films, are becoming available in digital but the cost is still extraordinary...

These challenges would create a level playing field for the groups participating in them, without restricting the intermingling of talent. I think it's a dynamite idea and would love to see it happen. |

As a novice myself, I like the ideas you presented. It would give me a chance to see how I fare with others like myself. |

thinking about the novices and the children, especially...could the comment ratio be upped, or do you think participants outside of the category could be cajoled into leaving constructive, educational comments so that these factions could grow in their efforts. These two groups, especially, would be ill-served by a competition that said: nice capture - 5. |

having a cheap camra, I cant do many of the amazing shots most of you get with your G2 or crazy $$$ Olympus camras... I like the Idea of bonus rounds; and as a master of photoshop, I belive a photoshop no holds bar bonus round would not be of any intrest to a DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPH website...

I think that the voting would be open to all, and with a post or two we could easily get people to give lots of comments. |

Don't sell yourself short. There have been a significant number of photos that have placed that were taken with relatively low-end cameras.
