Summer Heat - Shoot an image that represents how hot hot things can become in the summer or how to best beat the heat. The term "heat" can be used litterally or in a figurative way. No sunsets allowed.

Good idea. The way its described makes it applicable to all parts of the world regardless of the current season. I say we do it when it's summer nowhere. Fall in the northern hemispere/spring in the southern or vice versa.

I would love to see a "Battle Royal"
Say the top 50 photographers on the site are given a 48 hour challenge.
See who comes out on top. |

Take three 'themed' photographs and present them as a tryptych. The theme can be any subject but the three frames must be linked in some way. Use your post processing skills to present the three images in a single 640pixel wide submission. |
I really like this idea. |

School Days - shoot something related to academia.
(This means no sports/extracurricular shots. See Below)
School Spirit - shoot something related to school spirit or extracurricular activities.
Extra Rule - you may not include the actual name/mascot of a particular school.
Could make one an open challenge and one a members challenge and have them both the same week.
Whatcha think?

Just a reminder that challenge topics with (well-written) descriptions are more likely to make it into the topic database than those without. :)

I haven't been a member too long, and I somewhat enjoy the contests because it gets me out shooting, but many of the things listed above by shabbychic do sound a lot more interesting. In fact, a lot of those ideas seem to be in the archives from older challenges. I think it would be great.

I know some of these have probably already been done (before my time), and that some of these may be a bit macabre (thanks art-inept), but how about:
War:
Take a photo of what war means to you.
Fate:
Take a photo of something imminent (could be a reaction to an action, the predecessor to an inevitable event, etc.)
Barns:
Take a photo that includes at least one barn.
Temperature:
Take a photo wherein temperature is obviously an important element of the subject matter.
Death:
Take a photo of what death means to you.
Places of Worship:
Take a photo wherein at least one (or part of one) church/synagogue/temple/mosque/holy site/etc is the main subject.
Communication:
Take a photo of something showing communication. This could be human, animal, inanimate, or the vehicle by which communication is conducted.
Watercolor:
Take a photo that looks like a watercolor painting. (No photos of actual paintings allowed.)
Doorways:
Take a photo wherein a doorway or portal is the main subject.
Stranger:
Take a photo of someone that you do not know.
Crowd:
Take a photo of a crowd of people, animals, or things.
Glass:
Take a photo wherein something made of glass is the main subject.
I also like many of those already stated in this thread too (nature, landscape, artsy, triptych, etc.)

Careers - show us a photo that artistically represents a career choice (yours or someone else's).
Happiness in the Golden Years - take a photo that depicts happiness among the older generation(s).
Elvis - the second week of August is "Elvis Week". Take a picture that shows us what Elvis means to you.
