Been away for a few days, looks like DPC has gone mentor mad. I'm wondering if anyone is interested in my mentoring a gig photography thread? If so, let me know and I'll register my interest in setting up a thread. Problems with this topic are that you'll have to make a regular effort to go out and take photos of bands! On the other hand, this might be the motivation you need to get started in this very rewarding area of photography. I'll cover equipment (you can use p&s if you need to), composition, lighting, timing, and advice on how to get passes to those big concerts. And lots of feedback.

I'm up for it :)
I've not done any gig stuff but I have dipped my toes in with stage stuff under difficult lighting (can be found on my website).
Cheers
Darren

Thanks Darren,
I had a look at your website, theatre photography is an excellent introduction to gig photography! What kind of music are you into?
BTW, looking forward to that beer when you get to the UK! |

I am IN for this. I have no experience, but I am highly impressed with your work and any tips on how and what to do is very helpful. Also one of the main problems I think is getting a pass, any advice on that should sure help.

Ah yes, I remember your 'controversial' PS zoom-blur which is really effective on your shot. I must remember to try that at one of the next gigs I shoot, but not using PS so all the purists aren't too offended!
And thanks for the interest Gaurawa, it does take patience but the more shots you have in your portfolio, the easier it becomes to take photos for the bigger bands. We'll also look at how to target local magazines. Skiprow has excellent advice for this on his profile page, and I went a similar route although his interest lies in the bigger sporting events. |

I'm pretty varied on my music tastes, when I was at school I used to get beaten-up for choosing The Smiths over Wham, but looking back I've nothing to be ashamed of :)
My music tastes change frequently, recently I've got more into Folk (Eliza Carthy to be specific) but this morning on the way to work it was Prodigy's latest album as loud as I could get it, I think in essence I love music and will happily get into anything that connects with me - the backlash of this is that I tend to shun plastic pop production for the masses shite. I'll prolly be listening to Jesus and Mary Chain on the way home (Darklands album).
Hope this makes some sense, looking forward to the beer too! I'll almost certainly be hiring a car in August (till the 18th) so getting around should not be a problem :)

I'd definitely be up for it!
I love going to concerts and would love to take better photos there...that being said, I normally go to see more obscure bands at medium sized venues.
My next concert will likely be Sigur Ros (they haven't left Europe in years!).
My last few were Modest Mouse/Broken Social Scene/Do Make Say Think and Of Montreal.

Okay, thanks guys!
It looks like there are enough people interested, so I'll request our own thread.
If there are more interested people, do let me know!
Cheers,
Bob |

Okay, I've seen that Aboutimage (David) has placed this group in his profile, so I'll set up a new thread for this group. Sorry to add to the list of threads some of you may need to ignore! |

Hi Anni and Resusit8u,
I'll add you to the list.
If you were watching Live8 and felt sick to your stomach watching the photographers at work with Slash (because you weren't one of them), you've come to the right place!
If Live8 had happened just a little later in the year... but never mind. |
