What's the deal with the mentorship threads? I haven't heard anything about this (if there's another thread, I apologize)...here are my questions:

1) Could we have a 'sports' or an 'editorial' mentorship program (and could I join)?

2) Who initiated this and chose the participants?

3) Don't you think it will be annoying to consistently have 4-6 threads on the front page that most people can't partake in? Why isn't this being done on Yahoo Groups or somewhere private?

Just askin'...seems like a great idea, I'm just not sure about the implementation.

i think they all started with one thread this morning and seemed to have blossomed into many threads.

I too am wondering about the organization of the threads and how they fit in with the rest of DPC. I'm sure we could come up with some useful way to have it so everyone can benefit.

Original Thread

Small DPC Photography Groups

And David Simpson - AKA aboutimage

Hope that helps, contact aboutimage about more info and check his profile.

EDIT: I just don't have that much time but I have watches on all these threads and hoping to learn along with the rest... A big thanks to aboutimage ... very well done.

Is there anyway we could temporarily move these to the rant forum so they don't show up on the main page? I don't care if there's one original thread linking to the others that's in the general, or the out and about forum, but 6+ of these on the frontpage is kind of annoying.

aboutimage took the initiative here. I agree that these covering the front page may get old after awhile. I would possibly suggest a new forum/category for these to take place.. otherwise, you could always select the thread and click "Ignore" at the top, where the thread options are.

The funny part is I "ignored" all those threads - then this one popped up. lol

Ok, neat idea...but by necessity it's exclusive and very limited. I think it would be fair to have these moved to a private mailing list or something. This is exactly what Yahoo Groups is for...

I'm not being a poopy, honest! I love the idea and the initiative taken, but if this is going to be permanent and limited then it no longer becomes a dpc function...right?

Didn't mean to be a mole and get whacked...just wondering out loud.

I think it is a very worthwhile initiative, but before we can reasonably expect even a chance of site coding to accommodate the groups they have to prove they will last. I personally expect several to die off before long, while others become very successful -- then we can start to learn what makes a successful focus group.

The threads are currently in the 'Out and About' section of the forums, per GeneralE's suggestion -- and I don't see how they can be any more distracting than the GTG threads that most of us have no chance of going to.

Give it a chance to mature -- it's a new initiative and has some kinks to work out, but has the potential of being very worthwhile.

Why not put a section under the LEARN Category. Place the topics in there and have a mentor post topics. I feel that this way everyone can benefit and you won't have to go searching through the forums.

With the amount of helpful information on these forums, it's a shame that more topics and tutorials are not posted under the LEARN section.

I see what you mean - but I think the idea was that if they were available in the forums, people are more likely to read along and perhaps be able to learn by observation.

There is an intention to summarize the groups -- which are intended to have rolling memberships -- and post the information in tutorial form. But that is down the road a ways.

i think part of the problem is that so many came up all at once. after a while, the traffic will be limited and happen at different times so everyone won't be innundated.

if you don't want to see them, just ignore the threads. we promise to play nice and keep it to our own thread! :)

It was my understanding that anyone who wants to read it is free and hopefully can learn from it -- I've been following the others as well, just not participating. In due time, I suppose that the 'students' will graduate and there will be 5 or 6 more to focus on. See what I mean?

No problem! I would have liked the option to participate...I guess I should be glued to the dpc screen more often!

To all who are annoyed, my apologies. Truly, this turned into something far, far larger than I was originally looking for. The original intent was one group, and I got so many responses it kind of evolved into 10.

I can see many groups being a bit of annoyance on the front page, but it was done that way per Site Admin instruction. What I'd really like to have is a private forum in DPC. Why move to Yahoo groups when DPC has precisely the tools and appropriate membership necessary to make mentorship a reality?

Once again, I sincerly apologize to those who are annoyed that something new is taking place.

P.S. For those who are interested in being involved, you still can. Go to my profile for a list of the groups and mentors. Then PM the mentor of the group you are interested in. Also, ANYONE can read the threads and learn from them - they are in no way intended to be exclusionary.

i think that as long as there are mentors there will be other "sections" of the classes. i haven't read the other thread today, but i would go ahead and "sign up" for something that you want to do. if you can't fit in right this second, someone else may pop in and offer to "teach." :)

and, no, you don't have to be glued to dpc so much. here's an idea for everyone: go shoot pictures. rofl

I wonder if DPC Fanatics chat has the capability/functions available (or another chat site like that...don't want to put Manic on the spot) to create a place where we could hold real-time conversations with our groups? It might be a stupid idea...I'm just grasping at straws. :)

haha...no apologies needed.

This is great! I love the idea...just wondering out loud.

Good luck to all involved! I'll be eavesdropping frequently!

i think it's a good idea. i'm pretty sure DPCF can have multiple "rooms."

Just for the record, I would like to say that I like these mentorship threads. They seem a little exclusive at first, and perhaps they are. I don't really know why I wouldn't be able to ask a question, but if I have a question I suppose I could PM someone. I for one have already learned a couple of things, and I love the idea of the "assignments" like in the natural light thread. There is nothing stopping you from doing the assignments as well, or learning anything that is contained on the threads. I say anything that gets us thinking about new techniques and concepts, in the words of out nation's leader... "bring it on"

I think the idea was to keep the groups small so as not to overwhelm the mentors. I believe in the first post of each of those threads David has indicated that PMing the mentor with a question or comment is ok. You may even want to formally join one of the groups. Just ask the mentor if there's still space.

I think this is a wonderful idea! Its time that the forums were used for helping others, not complaining or ripping DPC apart.
The ignore feature of the forums are there for those who find the help irritating instead of reading the threads and learning from them
