Most seem a good bit underexposed with not enough backlighting.

What is underexposed? Yeah, We don't have any lights, that's next on the to buy list, but I like dark pics anyway, I like the mood they envoke.

Maybe add a hair light, of if you are using strobes put them a little higher so the light wraps around a bit. You want to seperate the subject from the background.
I'm also not sure about your processing. Looks like you ranat least some of them through NI (or similar). The saturation looks kinda overdone on a couple.
Something else to watch for, is almost everyone has one eye that is slightly larger than the other. Make sure the larger eye is towards the camera, so it hides it.
See how the right eye looks bigger?
In this one it's not as noticable.
Hope that useful for you

I think the lighting is OK for the moody shots (however pics with your baby don't feel moody except for the lighting, a brighter background would be more natural for them). It seems to me that you overdid the noise reduction (or it is a glow filter?) - the skin feels a bit plasticky to my taste.
what is the "New Backdrop System"?

I do like the photos, I especially like the one with the baby smiling real big. However, the baby girl has beautiful curly hair and it really doesn't show up that well, I would try to get it to stand out a little more. |

For Father's day I got the hubby a background support system, it's two light stands and crossbar, with a black background and a blue back ground for digital backgrounds(charokey think it's called). We have umberellas but are using a flash for lighting, lights are next to buy and some more backgrounds. So you see we aren't working with much. But was trying diffrent angles and stuff just trying to learn some stuff.

Ok here I some dumb again, but what is NI? The 1st and 4th have gothic glow, the b/w were auto destat, the rest are just auto levels and healing patch basically, I don't know how to do much in PS yet, practing on these some, when we were taking them we were discussing the need for hair light, and something that brings out the eyes, and trying diffrent angles. Thanks for all the advice from everyone, need all I can get!!

I don't percieve these as being underexposed, they are "low key" this makes sense, especially when considering that you have an attraction to "darkness".
I think that compositionnaly they are quite apealling.
what I'd love is to see only the ones "you" chose and not variations of the same image...I figure that a shot is like a painting, there should be only one offering...good or bad.
In conclusion, I think you're "vision" is quite good and that given the proper tools (more creative lighting tools) you creativity will be further enhanced. |
