I'm visiting Palm Beach this week, and as luck would have it, so is Dennis. We are on the east coast of Florida, so we are not in danger from the storm. It will just be a windy and rainy weekend. The storm is starting to be felt. The winds are picking up, and the ocean is worked up. The hurricanes last year wiped out most of the beach. A couple of pictures from this morning of whats left of the beach. |

I live right where the hurricanes hit last year, and work helping people rebuild their homes.
The sad part is that the beaches with buildings and bulkheads were hurt the most. Places where the dunes have been left intact fared much better. It breaks my heart each time I see another dune leveled for a house. The worst part is that these people whine the loudest when their homes get wiped out!
Even though you are in Palm Beach, have an escape plan ready. That storm keeps tracking to the east of the center of projection. From our experience, the computer models are not gospel.
Have a fun weekend and try to stay dry!

We are watching it closely. You are right about the beaches. Beaches are supposed to be mobile structures. When you build a house and put up a seawall, the beach can't do what its supposed to. The beach is a beautiful place, and people want to be there. Not sure what the solution is. |

Well, I think we should try to preserve the beaches. It may be expensive for the State to buy up oceanfront property, but the alternative is getting pretty ugly. What most residents here don't consider is that we are all subsidizing the lifestyle of a few. When these people make insurance claims it contributes to increased insurance rates for all. The homes are more expensive to repair, and usually take a harder hit. And when insurance won't pay, FEMA will. We all know where FEMA money comes from. Not to mention the billions of dollars spent on dredging the sand back onto beaches.
Destroying the dune ecosystem is just on of the many ways we negatively impact the environment, but it is certainly one with quick and harsh repercussions. Sorry to go on a rant here, but it's really hard to watch the inevitable happen like a slow train wreck.

I think we're planning on riding it out....we'll know more tomorrow afternoon. I work at the college and they let us out at 2:00 CST today and Monday it's closed too...hopefully (fingers crossed) there won't be that much damage this time.... |

I was just saying this morning that "Dennis" sounded too much like an accountant, and we should therefore rename it to something tougher, like "Krull". So if you could please refer to it as "Hurricaine Krull" from now on I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for your time.

I'm flying into Orlando this weekend for an accounting conference, so I think "Dennis" is just fine. :-)

You've got a point there, Pedro. Dennis really doesn't sound all that menacing. Whoever has the job of naming them needs some new material........(resources, inspiration, etc.)

Yea and I hope it don't come this way. The last little tropical storm that came through the other day triggered like 10 or so tornado warnings here. Nothing real bad a few buildings blown away, no one hurt. But as it headed for Atlanta it really did a number on Atlanta motor speedway.
See Atlanta Motor Speedway tonado damage.

Just went outside to see what was going on. It is quite impressive out there. Sustained winds from the east at about 30-35 mph. Some stronger gusts. Palm trees are swaying, the ocean is in tumoil and up to our sea wall. Strong smell of the ocean in the air. I'm glad we are far away from the center. |

Weather is just starting to get ugly here. The stores are a madhouse. I haven't went by Troy said and said the lines are insane. Troy's dad said yesterday that Walmart (the one in Callaway) had to call the police to come in because people started fighting.
We just moved last September....so I feel a lot better where I'm at now. We were living right on the water at our last place...now we're at least a block away! lol
