how would this have done in circle challenge?

You've captured some great texture in the stone. My only nitpick is the completely blown out sky. For something like this taking two or more exposures and blending them in post processing could help alleviate the problem with the dynamic range.

That, of course, is not legal in challenges...

is it legal to start from a single RAW image and blend two different conversions? With that you may be able to recover the sky...

Yes, according to site council that's legal, in advanced editing...
