Please don't take this as a whiny, jumping up and down rant about my score... it's not. I received a good score that was above my average. I need some clarification though. I think I must have a different understanding about leading lines and need to know how my shot did not display them. I have 15 wonderful comments, two of which point out some things I can try to correct as much as possible...but I would like to hear from those who felt it didn't meet the challenge as to why so that I don't make the same mistakes again. I received a decent score overall, but 46 votes were below 5, so humor me and let me know what I can do to better understand the concept of leading lines.
I wonder if the soft focus was confused as out of focus, and if the tree growing out of her head was really that distracting. Thanks in advance for your constructive feedback!!! :o)

The "lines" here are not obvious, but implied. Essentially, one might say you have "leading wedges" as opposed to "leading lines". It's a fine distinction, but couple that with the fact that a lot of people don't like "soft" and this may explain the relatively weak scoring ona technically superior image.

The tree was slightly distracting, but not overly so. I scored you an 8 on this, i thought it met the challenge perfectly. I agree with Bear_music that people here don't like soft, but a lot of brides do, so keep her happy not the voters. :) |

When I think of leading lines - sharp, straight , curved ,precise, dominant are a few words that come to mind. The lines must stand out of the photograph. I assume that is why you had some lower votes. Even though there is a line of direction here it lacks that "punch" to really make it stand out. Regardless of all of that, you have have captured a beautiful photograph and moment, so be proud !

i think it is dreamy laurie. :) I like the way they are looking at each other. I am particularly drawn to the people in the congregation, some of the women are sitting the same way, with their heads tilted and shoes in the aisle. I actually like this, some might find it distracting but i like it. I guess i am a little quirky like that

I left some comments Laurie. I guess I can repeat here for discussion or disagreement. I think for a wedding shot, this is fantastic and very creative. For any DPC Challenge entry other than "Weddings", I think it does not have the same kind of broad artistic appeal - meaning, I wouldn't buy a print of it because it's not my wedding and I don't know those people. Sure there are tons of ribbon winning pics and prints bought of strangers, but how many are wedding shots?
It does meet the challenge, but clearly (based on others' comments) not in the way that was as appealing as most others in the competition.
Hope this helps, take it for what it's worth. ;)

I gave this a 6. I thought it was a good shot, wel executed and with a great, soft mood. I didn't score it higher because I felt that though the leading lines were there, they were not really powerful enough within the overall image. Don't know if that's a helpful explanation.

i can pretty much only echo what you've heard already...it's a beautiful shot, perfect for what you shot it for, but the difference between your lines and the images that finished ahead of yours is that yours are a lot more subtle and implied.
if you are looking for the mistake you made, my guess is that you looked through your week's shooting and pulled something out to enter, rather than going out and shooting with the challenge specifically in mind. |
