Here is a project I'm working on for my Mother-in-Law's birthday. I want the photo to look like a watercolor, but still have a lot detail. How am I doing?

Your getting close. IMO the clouds still have too much detail, and it is still very smooth near the middle of the shot (where the dirt meets the water) to be considered a water color.

What are you using for an editor? Many have a water color filter that is tweakable for as much/little detail as you need. It would appear you are doing it the hard way by hand...Then again you could be applying a filter by layers and just haven't done the clouds yet.

I think contrast is too high to look like a watercolor painting. Have you tried using the Hue/Sat/Bright tool? Maybe try upping the brightness on different colors to make them appear more transparent, or play around with the blending modes and opacity settings until you get the look you are seeking. I would also use noise reduction on the image to get rid of some more detail.

Just trying to throw out some ideas your way. Hope it helps.

my attempt:

(full size)

watercolour filter very slightly
slight blur
levels
selected sky + reflection, blurred + lightened (very untidy round tops of trees)

In PSP9 Brushstrokes + Adjust Brightness/Contrast
Probably overdone it, I'm still new to all this editing stuff ;)

That's what I did with this picture:

Duplicate layer
On new layer: Filter>Brush Strokes>Angled Strokes - Settings: 0,30,0
Change opacity of layer to 47%
Duplicate original layer again and move new layer to top.
On new layer: Filter>Brush Strokes>Dark Strokes - Settings: 0,0,10
Change opacity of later to 43%
On the original (bottom) layer, add watercolour paper texture by doing Filter>Texture>Texturizer - Settings: Canvas,119,3,Top

I think it looks pretty realistic :)

i used a free PS action called "Bud's Hayes Island Cafe", then i ran it through NI to knock down some of the texture.

a little different than the others but i think it looks very realistic. i paint watercolors and it has the same textures as my paintings.

For watercolour effect I recommend playing with the noise removal tool- 'median', with radius of 4 or more.

I got this effect using the median tool:

I used Paint Daubs in photoshot to achieve this.

I used a light application of Photoshop's Rough Pastels filter on this one.
