I have a Fujupix 2800Z so only 2mp. For the web I presume 72 dpi is good enough but for print should it should be about 300dpi. The biggest print I'm going to get without losing quality is going to be 15cm x 10cm using 270 dpi. If I go for a bigger print the resolution will be too low won't it.

I shoudl be thinking of a 4mp to get decent 5" x 7" and above eg S5500?

Thanks

I use a general rule of thumb of 200dpi for very good print quality. Divide the number of pixels on each side by 200 to get your maximum print size. For example, if your picture is 2304 x 3072 then your largest print size would be 11.52 inches by 15.36 inches, so you'd choose an 11 x 14 print. I got excellent 5 x 7's with my old 2mp camera, and depending on how much detail there was in the shot even got some great 8 x 10's. There are software programs out there that will help you "upsize" your shots as well.

Edit: typo.

See this tutorial it should help in re-sampling.

But you should be able to get a good 8x10 print from a 2.0mp camera without re-sampling if you don't crop much. This was taken with a Panasonic FZ-1 [2.0mp] camera. Approved by DPC Prints up to 8x10 because it meet the 150dpi requirement. I have a print of it and it looks great. No re-sampling but it was only cropped for aspect ratio.

I have a 3.2 MP camera and got a good print at 16 X 20 through DPC Prints. It had a little distortion but not noticeable once I framed and matted.

I've made 8x10's with my old Nikon 775 2.1mp camera.
