I'm planning to order a 20D in the next two weeks or so. One of my friends in the local area has one for sale that is in mint condition with just over 5000 exposures on it for $1100. A new one from B&H is $1329 plus a $100 rebate from Canon. Should I buy the used one?

It's a reasonable offer, I would say it's fine to buy the used one.

For so little difference in price I'd go for the new one. It will have a warranty.
Unless, of course, the used one comes with a lot of things not included with the new one.

Hmmm, 10% savings off net new cost, certainly not a steal, but if it has no issues, sounds like a reasonable deal. Not sure I would upgrade from the 10D to the 20D, unless I was planning on keeping the 10D as a second body. Also, there's the tantalizing possibility of something new from Canon this Fall, so right now my philosophy is "holding pattern."

This is just a personal preference thing but if you're saving $129.00 on a camera that costs over a $1,000, I would go with the brand new one. Thats if they both come with the exact same things, no lens, etc. If I were saving several hundred or more and it had low exposures then I might consider it. But if $1,100.00 is your budget and its been well cared for, then cool.
Edited to add: There was only one post as I typed my response so my response really isn't as unoriginal as it now appears, lol.

It's not an upgrade.. it will become my primary body with the 10d as a secondary. I need another cam before the fall. If something great comes out in the fall, i'll deal with that then...

I was planning to buy the new one. I just came across this opportunity today and wanted to get some feedback on it...

Im with the herd, $129 is not enough of a discount to go used. Also 5,000 clicks is not lightly used |

Kinda figgered that's where you were headed. If I were looking for a second body and needed it now, and a 20D came available at that price, with at least a few months left on the warranty, I think I'd jump on it. In some ways, it's less a risk than a new cam, since you know it has passed the "infant mortality" stage without problems.

I would consider 5000 clicks barely used. The camera is 6 months old. I bought my 10d in october of 2003 and i'm at around 27000 exposures.

I think I'll offer him $1000 for it. If he accepts, I'll buy it, otherwise I'll buy a new one.

Considering you'd only be saving $100-150...I would go with the new one. 5000 I suppose isn't much, but it's still some wear. The price difference is so minimal that I would just get the new one with no use and a full warranty. If the price difference was like $300 or something, then yes I would get the used one.
Good luck and congrats.

$150 is a reasonable price to pay for a full warranty.
$1100 - camera breaks - no warranty - lose $1100
$1269 - camera breaks - full warranty - lose $0
I like scenario 2 better.

Good point, but I guess I'm seeing it from the point of view of a guy who just bought a 3 year old camera. However the warrenty is only 1 year... chances are it won't break that soon. But if they do...
edit: how much is a Mack warrenty?

That is different, however the camera is only 6 months old. I don't know the answer to your question but if it's less than the difference it could be worth going used.

I see what your saying but if I'm buying good, expensive equipment, and in John's case, equipment for his business, I wouldn't worry much about a hundred bucks. When you're spending $1300, $100 isn't much...especially for what he's getting in return - the warranty and and unused camera. If you're buying a $50 watch then yea, $100 more is a lot. |

I would still hold out for the 30D, my best guess would be Christmas at the latest |

Not worth it for $100...heck not even for $200. Go get the new one, get the extended warranty, and be done with it.

I personally don't think the savings is worht it. For $129, I'd get a new one with a full warranty.
I don't think Canons warranty is transferable.
In the end, you'll have to decide if the savings is worth it for you or not.
P.S. Beachcamera has a new USA Canon 20D with body for $1283 before the $100 warranty.

Look around a bit, you'll find a steal. My dad got ours when it had only been out for a couple months for $2100 (brand new body w/ warranty, 2 new lenses*, battery, charger, bag and a couple polarizers) You should be able to get all that stuff now for well under $2000 if you shop.
*Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III
and the one that comes with it standard.
