While none of these are my entry, I thought it would be interesting to compare these Metal entries side by side since they were so similar in subject...

Hey, that shiny penny photo is mine! Hehehehe. The one with the stack of pennies and one penny on its side, all sitting on glass, that’s my photo to be more specific. I think mine is the most different of the batch, as its not the "usual" coin shot where they are just laying around. I wonder why people rated it so low. Do DPCers around here think of a good coin photo as being too cliche? I recently created another penny photo called "The Stand Out" ( you can view it here //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=200294 ) and entered it into the circles challenge and got a nice ripe 5.9something score, top 40 out of more than 500 photos, so not too bad. Just curious about why one did great and the other did really mediocre. I also got three comments on "Pretty Pennies" and a whoping 21 (new PR for me) for "The Stand Out". Sometimes I think doing well in a DPC contest is half skill half luck. Well anyways, that’s just my 2 centsâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦.:) |

crisper the shot, the higher the score. No one wants poor image quality, even if photo is of high quality.

What do you mean by "crisper"? Do you mean like really sharp focus? Better compression, ect....? (If this comes off as being a retarded question, sorry!) I will say that I have noticed that soft focus shots around here don't do too well either. |

Thank You for that! How do you get thumbnails to appear? Do you have to be a paid member, or just know basic HTML (once upon a time I knew basic HTML, not anymore)? |

I meant sharper focus and crisper. I think soft focus is great when done well, because soft focus does not mean out of focus. It is an effect. A soft focus photo can also be crisp in appearance.
For instance the stack of pennies is nicely setup, but is not clear to view (sharp focus). The last in the row of coin photos is sharp. Better?

Maybe you just have better eyes than me! LOL I purposefully used narrow DOF for "The Stand Out". I also shot "Prett Pennies with a fairly small aperture because of focusing issues. On a more technical note, how sharp is your monitor? I know from experience that monitors can be focused, at least the CRT kind. Not too sure if you can focus an LCD. |
