You could probably look in the folk or spiritual section of your local music store.

Here's something you can try. In your search engine, type in 'Elderly Instruments'. It is a music store in Lansing, MI, but they are known at least nationwide. One of the best Martin guitar dealers around. I know they ship all over us, they might ship international, you could ask them. They've always been very helpful and responsive via e-mail with me. Anyways, they have a huge section of books, cd's, etc. on all, and I mean all kinds of music. They are very knowledgable and could probably steer you in a right direction. Good luck in your quest :-)

Try these sites:
Spirituals
The Spirituals Project (list of titles at the bottom of the page)
Books and Music of the Civil War
Beacon Press
Just a few to get you started.

Yes, this IS fabulous. If I'm not mistaken, it's the soundtrack to the PBS series "The Civil War." It should have examples of all kinds of music from that era.
As for older gospel...that's a little bit harder. If what you want an idea of is the style, there are quite a lot of choral works that are based on spirituals from that era. I'll do some looking and see what I can find to recommend.
Some possible songs:
Go Down Moses
Witness
Wade In the Water
Swing Low, Sweet Chariots
I've sung these all in choir, so I know you can find modern recordings. As for authentic recordings....that might be harder. |
