Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6G
and
Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6D ED
Besides the price (CAN $189.95 for the first one and CAN $489.95 for the ED) and the weight. I've looked at the specification for each and they seem to be the same. Just shopping for high-power zoom...
Thanks!

The ED is the higher end glass. It's designed to reduce CA, which is a factor on digital cameras. Plus it has a little solider feel to it in my opinion.

as far as I understand, D ED has a manual aperture ring, one piece of ED glass somewhere inside, and metal mount. Aperture ring is not needed in automatic cameras like d70, and the rest I don't think is significant enough to justify the price difference. Hence I bought the G version and quite satisfied with it, considering $129 pricetag.

What's CA?
I haven't felt the ED but I went to a shop that had the G and it felt so light, I tought it was a fake... |

CA=ChromaticAberation someone else can check the spelling

did you compare G to ED in this respect? I did not, but I did not find CA in the G version excessive either

i own niether - though i looked at them & test shot prior to purchacing the 80-200mmf2.8 -- i found the G had enough CA to not look at that line-- my older 70-210mm F4-5.6 has no perceptuall CA as well /..
i do own one G & thats the 10.5mm -- and it has a large amount CA -- but since it is a specialty lens -- i can live with it ..

Well, I'm sure your 80-200 f2.8 is a much better lens than either of these, no question. The question is whether the diff between G and ED would justify 3 times price diff. I doubt it...
