Nope, not a copperhead, it is a very young Eastern Milk Snake, and harmless. I had one as a pet a few years ago.

Edit: He's irritable because he's just eaten.

Yea it appears to be an eastern milk snake. Copperheads aren't typically that red. All snakes, regardless of how dangerous they are will strike when they feel threatened.

If you want to know what a copperhead looks like, check this link for a hirez photo of one:

Cheryl! Wish you had kept it hahah
I would have come down your house to get it.
I love milk snakes to death - i've got a picture with one around my neck i should show you.
Thats a milk snake that just ate a rat! shew they are not normally that fat or agressive - my milks have never bitten me, my garters are another story.

It is a milk snake, not a rat snake as I thought; rechecked my field guide.. common in east and mid west. constrictor family.

For snakes in Harlan look to the head - the coper heads and rattlers both have LARGE boofy heads with triangular jaws, notice the milk snake has a head like a pencil.

I will email you a picture of a copper head we had an encouter with last summer, so you know what they look like around here ( bear musics pic is not like our local copperhead).

Hollar at me whenever you see a snake, i'm crazy snake girl haha.

It's not a rat snake, it's a milk snake (common mistake though)

Snakes to be seen in Harlan C.

Copperhead (V)

Timber Rattler (V)

They say water mossasin or cotton mouths are not in Harlan, but i know ppl that have killed them here - i've not photo'd onemyself though. They are also venomous. So if you see a snake in the water, or with a white mouth, steer clear.

Some non - venomous

rough green tree snake

Eastern milk snake

Eastern Garters

There are a few more NVs, the black snake, and the ringsnake are ones i'll often catch and release around here also. I've no photos of those though.

Heres a website for the snakes in harlan though - //www.kentuckysnakes.org/search.cfm?option=southeast
