Take the time to leave comments to the images in the Birds challenge that you judged to be underrated. In my opinion, so many shots seemed to have been downplayed in this challenge because they didn't fill the frame with feathers. And no, I'm not necessarily talking about my own shot...

Here are some that I judge severely underrated:

Leave a comment to the image authors then post a link here.

I didn't get to vote on any in the challenge, but here's my thoughts-

Photo 1- I would've given a 7, it's very interesting, well composed, but I would've liked to have seen a different angle... or wider angle.

Photo 2- would've given it a 4- the birds look over-processed and it throws the image off.

Photo 3- 6, maybe a 7... it's very interesting. A bit over sharpened, though.

By the way, Denis, I would've given your beautiful and well-composed shot an 8, possibly a 9. I really believe you should've ranked higher.

You're right Denis, I think its a great idea leaving comments for those who finished down the rankings a little. I find it encouraging to say the least that someone appreciates my photo even though it didn't rate so well. Can't say it this time though - my bird shot finished well and my top score by a mile. I appreciate all the comments left.
BTW I left a comment on yours !

That was a stunning photo, Lisa. Congrats on the top 20 finish.

Edit: maybe I should've left that comment on the photo : /

Beagleboy - thanks very much for the comments on my shot - number two in your list above. I think this was one of the tougher challenges, and there were a whole lot of very stong images. I'm quite happy to be in the top 60.

Hey there Steve,

I want to make sure you know that I think your shot is beautiful, and the only reason I would give it such a low score is because of the processed look of the birds themselves. I do believe it was very well composed with great colors, but since the focus of the challenge was the birds, that's why I say it throws the whole image off... if the challenge hadn't been birds, and instead fit into another challenge somehow, I doubt my possible vote would have been swayed as much. (Saying this because I don't feel I gave a good enough explanation before)

Coming from someone that submitted a full bird-head shot.. I resent your implications ;)

Actually, I pretty much submitted it because I *knew* that's what I'd need for a decent score, and I needed one to get my confidence back up right now. lol

Still.. you want an underrated shot? Just go look at Laurielblacks. I don't have a link for it.. but I'm sure you can find it..
Oh, I found it..

5.9 is a pretty decent score, granted.. and she probably got hit for the vignette blur.. but this is a great shot and deserved much higher.. 6.5s IMO.

I totally agree.

hey Beagleboy...thanks for the press...i was wondering why people were actually looking at one of my images after a challenge...not a very common occurrence these days. i knew the fate of my image, but i'm far more surprised by yours. Technically it seems pretty close to perfect to me. And the bird looks like it's about ready to wink at the camera. Though if I think it will do well, generally it's doomed. And so your fate was sealed.

Thanks to all who left me comments on my "On Safari" entry. Although I finished 60th, it was a personal best for me both in Score (6.04) and in Comments (45), plus 1 Fav! I was still very pleased.

I have also posted comments of encouragement on some of the other shots I thought should have placed higher - however, I think the best excercise here is to post post & post more comments (it helps the commenter more than most people might think).

Thanks.

Then quit lookin' at my challenge entries, dude! LOL! If you do, maybe I'll win another ribbon... nah, I just need to practice, read and shoot more... lots more.

Shooting more couldn't hurt, but reading? That sir is a very dangerous thing, especially for this site ;)

I barely managed top-100, expected better. Would appreciate comments from those who voted it a 5-6 on what they would've liked to see.

I agree with kiwinick about lost detail on white feathers. Any others?

I almost gave up on entering any more photos after I ended up with a 130th place with this picture. Could those that voted it low please give me a reason why? There is no indication in the comments that would suggest that it was going to score so low.

One thing I noticed about the bird challenge is that most head shots put the main focus - the eye - in the centre of the image, when composition that's easy on the eye utilises the rule of thirds - just a thought.
