Passed a billboard today, big as a greyhound bus. It featured a macro of a preying mantis head. Magnificent detail and the head was about as big as my car. So, I try and oversize my pics a little and they turn into instant poo... How do they do that? |

Try standing 3 feet away from the billboard. Doesn't look so good, does it?
Edit: What I mean is, you're looking at it from quite a ways away. It doesn't require the same detail as an 8x10.

I have been imagining me attempting to climb that ridiculously small ladder arrangment up the bazillion steps to examine the true resolution from 3 feet away. Then I did the calculations of how much work time I would lose from injuries and then jail time for tresspassing and decided it was most likely not worth the effort. A similar end followed the genie outfit scenario. I am left with the tatto as the option with the least risk... now I just have to knock over a bank and the secrets of unlimited upsizing will be mine!
Nice call Andrew, found this after googling the question:
"According to David Sparer, photographer and professional markets representative, Camera Division, Canon USA, "Generally, for the photographer who is shooting for a billboard as opposed to a magazine, there̢۪s not much difference in how it̢۪s actually shot. Billboards are actually less of a challenge than very large posters, because with posters, you can get up close and see if there are problems in the image. On a billboard, they̢۪re viewed from far away."

Probably a medium format using extension tubes or maybe even an Hassenblad with a digital back I think they do something like 32 Meg or something very ridiculous you just need the $40K or so :) |
