Several years ago I signed up with 1and1.com for a pro account when they were offering 3 years for free. I haven't ever done anything with it and am now looking through the features to see what's all there.
My first question is, what is the difference between these:
Unlimited Domains = Yes
Subdomains........= 5
External Domains..= 20
I know a domain is like butterflysis.com but what are subdomains and external domains. Could someone give me examples?
Also, do you find 1and1.com to be easy to use?
Thanks,
Jen

A subdomain is something like yourname.butterflysis.com .
I've used 1and1.com and I think that they do a good job.

Subdomain = pictures.butterflysis.com
external domain = a domain regsitered somewhere other than 1and1.com
1and1 is alright, but don't ask them for anything, their canned answer is upgrade to a managed server account. When my free period expires, I'll be moving my site.

Thanks Lee! So, hypothetically if I had 5 friends who wanted a photo page of their own on my site, I could hook them up with their own links, such as " Lee.butterflysis.com"
Any idea what an external domain is?
Thanks again.

I'm using 1and1.com to host my site. Unlimited domains means that they don't put a limit on how many domains you can host in your account. You can have up to 5 subdomains on each domain. A subdomain of setzler.net is events.setzler.net for example. I could have 4 more if i wanted. I'm not sure what the external domains are.

Chris, thanks for the heads up. I wrote them once and they did reply quickly. Their answer to my question was to keep my free site for personal use and purchase an e-commerce site in addition. I don't want two different packages.
Who are you looking into getting?
Anyone else have other suggestions?
Edit: Oh, and I meant to say thank you for the explanation.

Whoa...slow down. :-D I don't even have anything created yet! :-) My friend keeps offering my services to people she knows telling them that I'll make them a site...but I keep turning it down because I don't even have a site of my own...or one for my parents' business yet!
Thanks again for the replies!

I am a reseller for //www.siteground.com now. I'm moving all my and my client's sites over there. They give you a lot of control over your account as well as some very good tools.

Chris, once again, thank you. I just visited their site and was instantly greeted by someone in a chat window. I've been asking them some questions. I just may sign up!

I've been reselling for Verve Hosting for a number of years and I love them. Good prices, fantastic customer support. I recommend them to everyone I can and host all the sites I maintain through them. |
