Right there with ya doc but someone would find some way to not know what the description was talking about. I think artist are usually trying to think out of the box to be different and unique but have a problem when it comes to conforming to a structured set of rules. We all want to be seen and noticed by doing it our way and having everyone shoot the same thing puts too much pressure on a lot of them (sometime me included).
I admit it will be hard to tell if some objects are in fact metal and I feel it would be very wrong for the photographer to bend the rules and shot a shiney metal looking piece of plastic and try to push it off as metal just to prove a point that the descriptions are too vague.

I agree with the idea that if you don't like the description sit this one out...voting included.

Chemically, Hydrogen is a metal ... I don't think many people would recognize that so easily.

Could you give us a record shot of that, GeneralE?

I have a feeling that we will have 450+ entries for this one... it's going to be fun scoring it.

(still trying to think of a grabbing image, perhaps pliers:-)

As for hydrogen, the only "easy" ways I can think of to photograph that are to shoot the bubbles in an electrolysis demonstration unit, or rent a replica of the Hindenberg ...

I thought an alloy was 100% metal, just not 100% of the same metal.

Alloy IS 100% metal. I work in a zinc plant and we add Aluminium to the zinc to make alloy. I'm on vacation! No zinc plant photos, darn!! :)

O', and I agree, the challenge is straight forward!

i think that description was just joking around, like being sarcastic if we don't know what metal is

I bet you could get some awesome pics from that plant, especially with a low light, I'd love to try that type some time. I always think of this image from the late, great Margaret Bourke-White:

linked from: //www.bluemoon.net/~mbwbio/

yeah darn for you but good for us that don't have to try and compete against that. ;-)

I think all threads like this should NOT BE STARTED! Geez! Let people think for themselves and take the pictures they think are appropriate and then we vote on those imgaes based on what we think!

People, People! Chill. This is about art and there is always going to be subjectivity. Don't get so caught up in the semantics and just take a great photo - ok, I'll shut up. Just my 2 cents' worth.

So I started people thinking.

If the right side of your brain is hurting, start using the left and ignore the rest of this thread and start doing some art.

I just submitted my version of 'Metal'. I made sure it was shiny, I also made sure it had some rust. I made sure it was NOT alloy, I made sure that I followed the basic editing rules.

God speed to all.

Now, I've got to go to bed soon because I have started a show and IT has controversy within the ranks as well, and I need to be fresh for the beatings.

Actually, there IS a way to make it even clearer and that's to take out that bit explaining what metal is. Does anyone seriously think there is anyone around who does NOT know what metal is???

Chemically, Hydrogen is a metal ... I don't think many people would recognize that so easily.

Doesn't matter. That's down to a choice on the part of a photographer about whether they want to include an image that most voters won't feel meets the challenge or not.

It doesn't take away from my point that people understand what metal is without the requirement of that pointless bracketed description, which doesn't help in terms of your example of metal anyway, btw.

Infact, that bracketed description raises more ambiguity because one is left wondering whether it's there to restrict what KINDS of metal are meant to be included in the subject matter or just as a throwaway and somewhat incomplete description of what metal is incase there's anyone who couldn't work it out already.

I agree, actually, despite having posted here myself too! I posted because I'm a pedant but, really, it's never a surprise that these threads occur because many challenge descriptions introduce more ambiguity than they take away...

SHRUG...

When I'm interested in entering, I have to admit, I ignore threads like this completely and go with my interpretation. If others don't agree, so be it. If I didn't think of an interpretation I would have enjoyed shooting, so be it. It's all just for fun, anyway, right? :o)

I surely hope Death Metal is included under "metal"

And sometimes, if you don't take it too seriously :(
it can be fun. =o

(Besides, this thread comes equipped with an ignore button.)

Uranium, anyone? Or is that the wrong type of "heavy metal" for this crowd?
