Argh!! Now why did I choose this weekend to fly to Chicago?! :-(

Oh, yeah--to visit my parents, brother, sister-in-law, and two cute nieces (2 and 5) for a week. :) :)

Nordlys, who will undoubtably need a vacation after this vacation...

Hey Andy I went down to the Charger Camp with my son and we had a blast. Got some ok shot's. Had my son with me and had to concentrate more on not losing him than taking photos. My wife would be a little upset if I came home with out him. Anyway we got a few autographs and had a lot of fun. Thanks for the heads up. It was great. I owe you one.

MOPA (Museum of Photographic Arts) in Balboa Park is running an exhibition of Graham Flint's gigapixel images (these amazing photos were mentioned in several threads here)

info

From the blurb:
"Physicist and photographer Graham Flint built a camera that carries capacity for clarity equal to NASA's most enterprising endeavors. Each image in this exhibition will range up to 22' in length and up to 4.5' in height. As an avocational endeavor, he has pursued the Gigapxlâ„¢ Project, a project (partially on view at MoPA) - which brings together the cutting edges of photographic optics, film technology, and digital processing, creating landscape photographs which contain unprecedented resolution and detail.

This Thursaday (June 16) at 7 pm Graham Flint will give a public lecture at MOPA presenting his work.
Should be interesting.

Just a reminder Props and Rods Airshow/Hot Rod show is going this weekend (25th and 26th) in Ramona. Their Website sux as to what is going on but the event was a lot of fun last year. I got lost in the Hot Rods for hours.

ED: I found the guys with the Rods pretty receptive to moving their rides to an open area they have there to get clean shots...you just got to ask.

Another cool gig is the Annual Scotish Highland Games in Vista...Nothing like seeing a man in a dress throwing a telephone pole...(sorry couldn't resist)...it looks like a lot of fun and also looks as though they need someone to take real pictures for them. Website

Annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts will be this weekend on the UCSD parking lot (corner of Regents Rd. and Genessee Rd.). Lots of fun stuff, arts, crafts, food, etc. Photography has traditionally occupied a prominent place at this Festival.

July 16th and 17th

Do you like the beach, Sandcastles and/or tons of scantly dressed people? The Imperial Beach (South San Diego) US Open Sandcastle competion is a must see. Building of the castles starts saturday morn, as does the IB Street Fair. Judging is on Sunday.

If you go on Sunday get there early and I mean early like 8 or 9ish if you want to get SandCastles w/o a lot of peeps. Here is one of my early entries here at DPC from last years contest. This gentleman was in the singles comp but the teams comp castles are huge if size matters.

Plenty of Photo Ops including Sandcastles, Street Fair, Live Bands, get up on the Pier and do some top down Surfer Shots (they surf through the pileons under the pier)...and then there was the girls...man I had some explaining to do last year when the wife wanted to see the contents of my CF. :)

Here is a shot from the pier at noon last year...get there early or you will be doing a Where's Waldo.

The official stuff and link:
The 25th ANNUAL US OPEN SANDCASTLE COMPETITION in Imperial Beach, California will be held on Sunday July 17, 2005. Professional and amateur sand carving teams from throughout the U.S. (and Canada) compete in the largest sand castle building competition with more than $21,000 in cash prizes. The competition gets underway on the sand with both masters and amateur entrants lined along the beachfront from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., there will be a street festival, live music and entertainment all day. Awards will be presented at 4:00 p.m. Handicap parking is available. Main sponsors include the City of Imperial Beach, County of San Diego, Neyenesch Printers, Scott Products, People's Chevrolet and Caravan Canopies. The media sponsor is The Planet 103.7 FM

Personally it is one of the Best Cheap purchases that I have made for my 20D. I got mine for 70 bucks up at North County Camera (Now Calumet). The sharpness is unbeatable, excellent lens for Portraits (80mm with the 20D crop factor) and Stills in low light situations. Anyone doing the Macro Challenge that has this little guy and don't have a true macro lens (Me) is probably reversing it on the end of another lens for outrageously close detail.

Excellent Lens for the price... I use if for those indoor candid events in low light situations.

I just got a phone call from a friend telling me there will be a music festival tonight in Coronado. At the park on Orange street. Bring your lawn chairs and picnic, he said. Starts at 5pm, I think. He'll call me back with full details later, and i'll post the "for sure" time.

Said he didn't know what kind of bands would be there, but I'm betting there will be lots of photo opportunities.

Hey David are you North County, San Diego or South San Dag? Actually are you going to the Zoo or Wild Animal Park? Reason I'm Asking is that I will be going to the WAP Saturday or Sunday (I'm flexible). I noticed that you have a kit lens and a shorty in your profile...I happen to have a Tamron 28-300mm AF 3.5-6.3 XR Di here that is collecting dust...I could throw it in the bag if we were at the park at the same time you could slap it on your 350. It produces good images it was just hit or miss for me, One picture sharp the next soft.

Using the Tamy 28-300mm

Just a thought...

Thought I'd revive this dead horse for a time or two. If anybody catches Cruisin' Grand look me up. I am at the Continental Deli On Grand and Kalmia. The entrance to the Deli is off Kalmia. Mention Dpc and I'll toss in a free Bratwurst. I'm the guy grillin at the grill. I promise it'll be the best Brat you ever had. I used to own the deli and now I help out the new owner on Friday nights. Now if everybody from Dpc shows up on the same night I'll have to reneg on the "free" offer. Would hate to bankrupt him in one day. Hope to see some of you.

Small world Nick.
I try and make a few passes through there almost every Friday, as my shop is only about 1 1/2 miles East on Grand Ave (near new Home Depot)

Plus most of the shots in my DPCPrints Folder were shot there.
Now to see if I can remember to stop by!
