I have some older (4 years maybe) AA nimh batts that came with a charger, and takes overnight to charge.

When i got my Fuji, it came with with a maha charger and powerex AAs, and it charges in 2 hours or so.

I got some AAs from walmart, digital brand maybe, and they have no info on charging.

I know there are now 15 minuted chargers but lets ignore them for this discussion.

Does it matter which charger i use for which battery? They all charge, but i have no idea if the charge amount put in the battery varies or if the life expectancy of the battery is being shortened by charging in 2 hours instead of 8+. Also, the 'digital' batteries - any way to tell how i should charge them, if it even matters?

If you can, buy yourself a smart charger. The one I have is essentially a fast charger, but it will intelligently stop charging each individual battery when it is 'full'. I can leave my charger on overnight if necessary without worrying about them getting mega-hot, and can also know exactly when they're done if I'm in a hurry. Because the batteries charge individually I can also charge some partial/discharged batteries at the same time.

What brand and model is it? both my chargers shut off when the batts are full.

I am usein ghte batts in a GPS unit and not getting the kind of run time i should be. They seem OK in my Metz flash though. (charged the powerex in teh 8 hour charger)

I think it's an unbranded charger that I got from Maplin. I can try and find out the manufacturer when I get home.

If your charger reckons they're 'done', maybe the batteries are just low power, or poor quality?

I have a similar "smart" charger from Panasonic -- takes about 2 hours to charge 4 batteries. If you are a Costco member, they have/had a great package deal on the charger and about 10 batteries for $25.

I also have an orlder Eveready charger which takes about 14 hours, and has to charge in pairs. I only the batteries in the charger they came with -- there may be differences, so I do that until I hear that it is safe to do otherwise.

If you can wait for the longer charging time, the slower chargers will make your batteries last longer (not in actual use but in the number of charges you can apply before the battery goes bad). I use an energizer 14 hour charger. I also have a Maha 6 hour charger. Both of them shut down when the charge is complete, but i use the 14 hour charger most of the time.

It's a Vanson Speedy Box BC-1HU. Not a spectacular brand, but it's worked well for me so far.
