Of shots in which activity within the frame can be a factor; do you find yourself shooting too soon or too late the majority of time?

I shoot at the perfect time. Unfortunately, my shutter takes about two seconds to focus, then another second to click.

I think I don't miss a lot of actions shoots. I put it in continuos shooting and "fire at will". Ahhhh. Of course I put it also in shutter priority so I can have enought shooting speed for 3 fps. What bothers me is that even this way, sometimes I can't get 3 fps, and I don't know why. For example I put 1/500 in shutter speed witch should be more than enough, and sometimes it doesen't do 3 fps. Any thoughts? Is it because I' min single focus instead of continuos focus? Is it because it tries to focus between the 2 shoots?

Regarding the missings I think because the above subject I miss because late shooting.

Invariably late. I haven't yet mastered continuous shooting seeing as I only do action shots maybe once every 6 months.

Have you tried a faster memory card(for those that are having trouble shooting fast enough)?

We should have a 'One That Got Away' challenge to try and accomplish this on purpose. I think the results could be rather amusing.

I wouldn't think this would be a factor until the buffer fills up. My camera is supposed to do 5 fps, but I have never tested it. I do a lot of shooting in drive mode (continuous), though.

always early
always.....

Well it does certainly help with speed when the buffer fills, but it seemed just a little bit faster before... Hmm I'll have to time it out one of these days...

Oh, that's a great idea. I have one heart-breaker that got away from shooting for the Bird challenge that I can hardly wait to share. At the appropriate time, of course.

One trick I've used is to keep the camera 'live' by pressing the trigger half-way so that when a fast action comes along, I have at least a chance at getting something. This uses up the battery a bit faster, but that's a small price to pay if I get the shot I want.
I also use a fast compact flash card which seems to help.

sounds fun, but some might pull out that handy crop tool...

My luck, I would try and it would finally be my perfect shot that I can never get. :-|
