I've added to pics to my workshop. I'm trying to learn photoshop and all the tricks to make my pics better. One is the original, the other has been edited a bit. ( and please try to dumb it down a bit, I'm still happy my camera auto-focuses :)
Please take a look and tell me
a. What I did wrong in my editing
b. What I could have done instead
c. General opionions

You seem to have done the editing quite well. Though the image itself could use a little more light as it appears to be a touch underexposed. More contrast would probably help the fish stand out a bit more. |

Well shoot..I hit the wrong button and lost my whole post.
Duh
These are decent enough. I like #1 for the clarity but not the crop.
#2 is a bit fuzzy. Did you up-size? Might try a bit of color boost. Either way they are good for shooting through glass at a moving target!!! :) |

Actually I didn't resize it at all. I did put blur over everything but the fish itself. So the rocks are a bit blurry.
I don't remember if I used flash on it or not, I'm thinking not because of the glare. I was using a zoom, with the camera about 4" away from the acrylic tank.
I believe this is a macro shot. yes???? Since printed on a normal 4x6 print the fish is about twice the size of live.

I tried to fix the colors and brightness of your original, ofcource the image I edited is much smaller then the original.
I started using levels, since you are a beginner I'll go the easy way :)
just move the sliders marked with red arrows to the beginning of the mountain, and click OK
then I added some saturation
and then I added a little brightness and contrast
then I saved for web and uploaded
and this is what I got
hope this helps you to start using the magnificent tools available in photoshop :)
the images of the toolbars might look different on your computer, since I am using mac and photoshop CS |

oooooo
Wonderful, yes this is exactly what I'm looking for.
I feel ime my composition is ususally pretty good, but lighting/noise/distractions get me.
Thank you!

Ok I've taken your suggestions (and directions) and come up with two new ones....
New take???
The one thing that bugs me about these is that he was actually very white, not the yellowish hue that comes with the editing.

good show I like both, just wonder if the first one doesn't have a little too much yellow cast?

These are much better. There's a lot more contrast so the fish stands out. What noise is left is not bothersome and to me actually adds to the character of the image.
Of the two, I prefer the desaturated one. This one I feel makes the fish stand out the most. |

bummer...
well there are two ways, I hope your well versed in photoshop.
One is hitting Ctrl-B to bring up the color editor and play with the sliders a bit.
Two is to hit Ctrl-M to bring up the curves editor and use the three droppers in the bottom right corner. The first dropper is used to select the darkest point in your photo. The second dropper you can ignore. The third dropper is for the white point in your photo... this might bring the brightness up too high if you don't already have a good white spot in your photo.

I have a beta and he sure is happy since I got him a heater, a two gallon tank, plants and feed him special beta pellets.
His color has really pumped up and he's now very active.
That aside, I am replying to your post because I'm curious if you tried getting a picture of him all fluffed up? Mine gets excited when I hold up a mirror or a brightly colored object etc. That would be fun to see.

Oops, I just saw that he's dead now. Sorry to hear that. If anyone else has a beta and wants to make him happy. There are some great websites detailing how to care for them.

I found this pic and cleaned it up a little. I'm not sure what to do with it to make it better. Just being able to SEE the little buggers is amazing to me since each one of those baby fish is only about the size of the end of a nice sharp pencil.
