I needing to buy an Ipod for storing music for our terrace/bar, and have decided that spending the few extra dollars for the 30G Ipod photo might be worthwhile.
Can anybody tell me if I can connect my Sandisk Card Reader to transfer photos directly from the card. The reps at the store said I could connect the camera, but were not sure about the card reader.
Thanks.

Assuming you mean the iPod photo, the Apple Camera Connector (an optional accessory) should allow you to connect either. From Apple's site. "The iPod Camera Connector's USB port can only be used to connect supported cameras and media readers." |

I'm not sure about a card reader (my little card USB reader doesn't work with mine). It may be OK if it's powered up though.
I use a camera connector (listed in Apple iPod accessories) which works like a dream form my 20D. It takes a while to download shots from a 1GB card - about 10 mins - but when you're out and about the iPod Photo is just a necessity. I love it.
If you take your shots in JPEG or RAW + JPEG then you'll be able to review them on screen too. Hopefully the software updates will build in RAW viewing ability soon. |

if you need the mp3 player for a bar, and want the ability to use it for your photos to, then I would reccomend the Archos AV400, not the ipod photo, all photographers I know that have bought the ipod photo dislike it, and most have sold theirs and bought the Archos AV400.
I have the Archos with 80GB disk, it has a built in CF reader with optional adapter for other media cards, it has a much bigger LCD than the ipod and has the capability to work as a video recorder/player (mpeg1,2,4, DivX, avi, and more)
it is a good mp3 player, and is usable as an external harddrive.
just thougt I point it out, a much better device than the ipod photo :) |

You would if you tried an Epson P-2000! Just kidding. :-) (I've never actually used an iPod Photo, although I do have a 3rd gen iPod)

that epson is the worst copy of the Archos that i have ever seen, it is supposed to play videos, but the only videoformat supporter is "motion jpeg", not likely that you can get a movie in that format ;) |

The Archos is marketed as a video recording device and handles video much better than the Epson. However, the Epson is marketed as a photo storage solution and handles RAW files, unlike the Archos. For photo storage, I'd take the Epson any day.

My sandisk cardreader will NOT work when connected to my Ipod. It has to be straight from the camera itself. Which sucks. 1) downloads take a very long time with RAW files (127 files = about 1.5 hours) This is vaulebale time to keep shooting, inwhich you can't because the Ipod needs your camera during this time. However, I carry my Rebel to use as my card reader to down load my files to the Ipod and use my other cards to continue on shooting with my Cannon 20D while those are are being stored and so forth. 2) the juice in the Ipod will drain VERY fast and good for only one 1Gig of files. Need of rechargeing before you download another 1 gig of information.
Overall, Apple has a nice idea with the Ipod Photo...but not yet there. My advice save the 350 bucks for a Ipod Photo and instead, get 2-3 1 gig cards. Or another portable storage device.

This pretty much agrees with everything else I've read about iPod Photo. I'm curious what kind of write times mk is getting and whether she shoots RAW.

i shot only RAW and i use the Belikin card reader to transfer photos to my 20GB iPod. I think its a great device. I took over a thousand photos on my trip to Costa Rica and it took up a little over 6GB on my iPod, all 6GB uploaded to my computer in a couple of minutes

The idea of needing the camera to make the transfer seems ridiculous to me. It has to work with a reader or what's the point.
Thanks for the replies.

Ahhhh, now there is some important info: I see that the Belikin card reader works with the Ipod Photo...If I were to get that card reader, I can lessen my load without my Rebel. However, need to get more cards though. I really dont have a problem with the Ipod Photo other than lugging around my rebel when needing too. Power from the IPOD is still and issue with me. In order to keep my power up in the Ipod, I must get a power adapter for the car.... |

the Belikin reader takes four AAA batteries, so it uses it own power to transfer, the only power the iPod needs is to access the hard drive. I could easily make four to five tranfers of my 256 cards without need to recharge my battery.
The beauty of having two cards with the Belkin reader, is that you may continue shooting with one card while to other card is beign downloaded to the iPod.

If I understand correctly, you don't need the iPod photo connector with this reader. Is that correct? The reader plugs straight into the iPod.
It also seems like you don't actually need an iPod Photo, just a regular (not mini or shuffle) iPod.
That would be great.

Im just brining this thread back up because I've been looking to buy an iPod and I was thinking about buying the iPod Photo and the camera connector made by apple, but now that I found this thread, my opinion changed. Is this the card reader you've been speaking of? Belkin Media Reader for iPod? It looks like it goes straight from the card to the ipod without needing the camera as an energy source. My only question is that on the site, it says for iPod Photo, but is this compatable with a regular iPod? I wouldn't mind not having the color screen if I don't have to pay as much.

thats what I have.
apple no longer makes a different iPod photo or regular iPod...they now use only the iPod Photo but have droped the Photo suffix.
it does NOT reqire the camera at all for the transfer.
I own the 20GB 4th generation iPod which is not a color screen either. works beautifully!
...also, if you are buying a new iPod from apple, dont forget your student discount!!!

I have and IPOD 60gig and the Apple IPOD camera connector also I was given the Belkin Media Reader for iPOD that works as well. If I am out shooting though I usually carry a few 1 gig cards with me. I usually backup my photos to my iPod using my computer or laptop. It does take a while using the readers and it will reduce your battery life on your iPOD.
The Apple IPOD camera connector kind of sucks cause once you connect your camera no more shooting until its done.
The only thing that the Belkin Media Reader for iPOD does not work with I beleive is the IPOD mini, not sure about the nano.
