Imagine my surprise today when I made a half-arsed bid a few days ago on a Sigma 105mm EX Macro on eBay for $275 or so.. not realizing that this was different from the DG, I figured I would have to be a very lucky man to get it for this price.. turns out that I got it for $260 and the apparent difference is that it's not the DG! From what I've read, it should still be a superb lens... granted, it's somewhat unexpected and kind of a bittersweet win. Sweet, for obvious reasons - especially my heavy interest in close-up photography lately. But slightly bitter, since I was more just dreaming to myself with my bid than actually expecting to pay for it! Yikes!
Any input on whether I made a good buy? I sure hope so! I've been wanting a macro lens for quite awhile, but have never gotten to a point where I thought I had enough money to buy one.. guess I'll go through with it though and just hope I'm happy.. I guess that means my next purchase (which I won't be bidding on unless I'm positive I want it!) will be the Tamron 28-75... when I actually have the cash!

Seems to go for $350-400 at photo retail sites online.

I believe that might be the DG model that goes for that price - or sites that didn't update their prices once the DG model released. I did manage to find this link, although not sure I would trust buying it from them since I've never heard of this site before:
//www.cambridgeworld.com/sigma_105mm_f2.8_ex_macro_lens.htm
I'm at least somewhat pleased, as I've been trying to find an economical way to get an actual macro lens (as opposed to diopters, coupling rings, extension tubes, etc).. I was looking into purchasing a cheap FD macro and an FD-EOS converter... but turns out those converters are hard to find and cost quite a bit of money! And hey, at least it has 58mm threads, so I won't have to buy any new filters for it!

Hey Brian,
I wouldn't worry about the DG version being better than the non DG version. It's just a different coating on an elemet to correct ghosting/flare seen when used with some camera sensors. If your camera doesn't have this problem, then you won't see any improvements from the DG and as far as I've heard, no one has said that their Sigma 105 EX Macro lens has ghosting and flare. I don't know how old that lens is, so if you get a error 99 signal, just mail it to Sigma in NJ with a description of the camera you are using it (300D) and they will re-chip it for you to make it work for free. I think Cambridge store is a bait and switch outfit, B&H seems to have it for about $350 and I think that is the going price.
Oh wait a minute, if it says error 99, then it means that the lens is busted and I'll take it off your hand for $20, yeah, that's it.
BTW, we're shooting at LA zoo this weekend and there are things going on on 6/25-6/26 and early July. Join us if you can.

Haha - okay, thanks for the tip on the error 99 (the one about sending it to Sigma, not the broken one). I'll keep it in mind - I haven't heard anything about that, so I hope that it's in working condition when I receive it.. I'll be anxious to use it (right smack dab in the middle of finals week too - I'm always great with timing like that).
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it out this weekend (maybe 5% shot that I will) because of finals and whatnot this coming week. Perhaps the 25th-26th weekend if I'm in town - sounds good to me :). Have fun at the zoo with your Bigma :p

Brian,
Keep the other dates for the Sidewalk Artfare and the July stuff in mind as well.
Enjoy your macro lens.
