Unfortunately, It hasn't been partaking in challenges...although I keep watching the topics & trying to squeeze in an entry to no avail.

As some of you may remember me posting about it, last month was the Long Island Lighthouse Challenge. It kept me very busy for quite a while & was in the planning for about a year, but it was well worth it!!

In the process of working with ALL the lighthouse groups on LI, many positive things have happened. I made every piece of artwork associated with the challenge & was the sole supplier of the official merchandise. Between the merchandise & running 3 lighthouse sunset cruises (I've added cruise director to my list of jobs), I've raised over $1000 toward lighthouse restoration & education.

During the challenge weekend, when I got to our first cruise, the captain showed me this...

MY VERY FIRST MAGAZINE COVER :o) of my 2004 March Free Study entry. Talk about a bright spot in my day!!

2 days later, I got a copy of this...

For the cover, I donated it's use since it was bringing awareness to the restoration efforts of that lighthouse, Cedar Island. I was disappointed the 2nd magazine didn't mention it's need for restoration, but the payment I got eased the pain ;)

Then the following week, I went to the top teaching hospital in our area, Stony Brook Hospital. I am greatful to them for caring for my handicapped nephew many years ago when he was an infant. It was a grand opening to their new restaurant... touting all in house gourmet cooking....including absolutely DELICIOUS pastries! They completely redecorated, including the lobby, which icluded these...

60" panoramic of a Montauk Point Med format pic (I LOVE my Mamya!)

A 20"x 24" of the Cedar Island shot...along with 5 other images by Bob Muller, the author of "Long Island Lighthouse: Past & Present". We both donated the use of the images in exchange for a donation to the Cedar Island restoration funds.

I have to say that NONE OF THIS would have happened had I not networked & got directly & actively involved in the niche of my photography & imprinting work. Handling all the merchandise & running 3 cruises has put me in contact with hundreds of new customers that are GUARANTEED to be interested in what I have to offer.
I also have to say that I have NEVER worked my ass off this much ;) But it's all definitely been worth it!
I made this as a little reward for the cover. It's a new item I'd been wanting to try anyway & this gave me a good reason.

If you want to pursue your photography as a business...network, network, NETWORK....and really get personally involved in anything related to your niche & NETWORK SOME MORE! It definitely pays off :o)

Very cool! Congratulations to all these wonderfull things happening... I watched a program a while back about light houses and people forget their sole purposes or about the care takers that stay in the storm so boats can have a light to light the way.. There are a lot of them and they still need restoration.. Its awesome you have taking your passion for photograpy and for light houses combining them together to earn a living..
I believe you are right about the networking 100%...
As I am finally involved in a local photogrpahy meetup group... Your peers and like minded people will help a lot as well I think...

Anyways congrats and thank you for sharing your success.. Its very interesting..
Peace..

Congratulations on a job well done. Though, from the thumbnail on this school monitor, I thought your first cover picture was on North Pork magazine.

Thank you all. Even on Long Island, being in the county that has the most llighthouses of any other county in the US...many don't understand the history & the need to preserve it. Many don't even know Cedar Island exisits...but I'll be changing that :)

KaDi, do you mean the 2nd mag? It's Soundnings Magazine...a Northeast boating mag.

congrats Nancy and amazing!! I have a co-worker (Coast Guard) that loves lighthouses. I will have to pass your work along to him. Since you donate I think it will really spark his interest.

I miss hanging in chat! lol
Snuck in there last night for a bit & hope to get more time to pop in now that things are slowing down. Sometimes I just peek at the sign in page to see who's in chat so I can be depressed about not having time to hang out...lol

Thanks for all the comments.
Part of me jumps for joy when I think about it & part of me is in a state of disbelief. You spend so much time wanting it, that when you finally get it, it just doesn't seem real & you're not sure where to go from here. Then there's the days when you think you bit off WAY MORE than you can chew & doubt your ability to handle what you've prayed for.(be careful what you wish for...you just might get it!)

All & all, I take it as a very good thing and a major first step to my ultimate goals...even though I do freak out on occassion ;)
