I'm not sure what your grill has to do with it...we're talking cameras, not cooking, right? ;)

hahaha sorry I've been watching MuchVibe too much apparently.
I guess my whole point of starting this thread is to encourage photographers (no matter your level) to just be respectful and leave well enough alone. And please, never ask "so what'd that run you?". |

Some times it can be a case where someone is just getting into photography, and may have not seen a nice camera system and is genuinely interested in what a system like that may cost, and if it is in fact worth the money before they invest their hard earned dollars towards a purchase of that size. I don't think it's a bad thing to have someone approach in that scenerio, as long as they don't become a pain and start a camera war or pestering trying to figure out why you're doing what you're doing and tagging along...
Who knows, you could help someone further their love of photography and be someone they site as helping them make that leap to the next level.

The P&S and prosumer cameras are getting better. There will always be a gap between them and the top-of-the-line cameras, but as the gap narrows the more expensive models become more "over-priced" in the view of many, and "snob" appeal becomes a greater part of their value.
Same thing is happening with photo-editing software. Photoshop is being crowded by less expensive, and even free, programs that can do enough for everyone but the full time pros.
This is hard to accept for the people who have an investment of money, time and sentiment in yesterday's top dogs. But the companies pursuit of profit comes ahead of your feelings.

People are more than welcome to search online and contact whomever they choose and ask whatever they'd like (I sometimes get emails like that, they're cool actually) but when I'm working? Come on... |

I'm sure we all had a time when we didn't know the benefits of an SLR over a compact.. well, maybe not all of us - but I certainly did. I would wonder why certain cameras needed such a big lens to achieve "the same thing" mine did. Now, I've seen the light... and the glass.. and I'm much poorer because of it!
But I do understand - it can be somewhat annoying when someone assumes that you just have a big, hulking POS and haven't seen 'the light' of the small cameras. Although I must admit, I wouldn't mind owning a compact - it's a bit hard carrying mine around at amusement parks, parties, or whatever else ;)

If someone approached me to ask me directly about my work, the genres I work within, etc etc that'd a totally different scenario than just assuming I'm a girl and therefore a twit that fannies around the office in a see-through top with the press releases (Bridget Jones's Diary).
Most everyone that comes up to me seem to be on a mission to make me feel small. |

Surely almost everyone at work has had someone ask them about what they are doing and why they are doing it? Is photography such a different discipline from all others that such questions cannot be asked?

DSLR's are better then P&Ss!!! No way! My camera has a movie mode and makes cool sounds. What DSLR can do that?

Speaking of point & shoots vs. SLR's... there is a great article on Rob Galbraith's website about a photo journalist who primarily works only with point & shoots!
//www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-6468-7844
Alex Majoli is an award winning photographer with the Magnum Photos agency. He has done assignments in Iraq, China and war torn Congo... all using Olympus point & shoots while getting strange looks from fellow photographers in the process.
His photos have appeared in major publications across the world, including National Geographic... who didn't care that the photos were shot with a point & shoot because they were good photos.

On the second night of the fire I was standing out on a county road sucking in smoke for about 2 hours doing long exposures (it was about 11:00 at night with my Pentax 645). This car pulls up, a woman jumps out runs right over next to me with her little Olympus Stylus (a nice little point and shoot) pops off one quick shot- with flash no less- then looks at me and says in a gleefull voice; "I got the same shot you did" and bounds back to her car. I glanced down at my watch to see where I was in my 3 minute exposure as she happily drove off. |
LOL - wow, that sounds pretty obnxious (the way I interpret it) of her. I hope she got the blurry/dark image that I think she did ;P. I was never aware that people maybe had this kind of view of photographers - that they're just as able (and smarter? apparently she thought so) with their P&S.

I actually still sort of miss the movie mode.. and the rotating LCD screen on my old F717.. now when I put the camera to the ground for a shot, I have to lay down there with it.. instead of folding back the LCD screen and looking from above :(

A compact P&S among the big guns.
Note the photog second from left at the top, he has two big-lens DSLRs hanging off of him but is shooting with a compact.
BTW, does this look over-sharpened?
