Anyone have any comments on what is the best all around zoom for the Canon 20D? or walk around lens?

Doesn't have to be Canon just to fit a canon. Doesn't have to be zoom.
Please say why you like it so much.

Well that´s always a matter of opinion but if you want mine it´s the 24-70L.

When I used my D Rebel it was the 16-35 f/2.8, now with the 1D II it is the 24-70. Depends on your shooting style. I like wider angles.

I like the 17-40 f/4, because it zooms out to the 35mm equivalent of 27mm for a 1.6 crop factor camera. I like the wide stuff, so the 24-70L wouldn't be wide enough for me on a 20D.

I'm in the same boat... looking for a good buy with backpay money.

So what's up with getting rid of the Canon 17-40mm f/4? Don't like it?

I do like the wide angle but would like some reach too. I would sacrafic both for sharpness.

Tamron 28-75 XR Di f/2.8... it's extremely sharp throughout the zoom range, works well in low light, and it's a third the price of the Canon 24-70. Unless I have a specific need for wide angle or a long zoom, this is the lens that's on my camera. For greater range, the Canon 17-85 IS would be a good choice.

Not the sharpest lens, but very functional and handy, Canon 28-135 IS.

I wouldn`t be without my sigma 18-125mm lens.. It can`t be beaten for a walkaround lens and sharper than the kit lens.

For a walkaround lens I used to say the 17-40mm F/4L, but I recently bought a 24-70mm F/2.8L and I am just amazed at the sharpness and overall quality of the lens. If I know I need to have the wide angle the 17-40mm is still my choice (I'm definitely not selling that lens) but for just generally walking around I have a feeling I will be using the 24-70mm more. It's just that much fun to use.

So you're saying that your canon 17-40mm isn't sharp? That sux.

I'm good for reach right now. The Canon 300mm f/4 L IS is my favourite lens at the moment. Will be purchasing Canon 1.4x converter to go with it shortly.

I can justify having this lens. I've owned it now for 4 months and used it maybe 6 times. That 1000$ canadian dollars sitting in waste. I do you my 28-135 a little more but would like something a little wider.

The 17-40 is supersharp but no lenght.

without owning one... I think the best all around lens for me would be the 70-200L 2.8 IS. But it might be a too short some of the time.

the 17-40L is very good, but not the best walkaround lens since it's just wideangle, the 28-135 isn't the best either since it's 45-216 on 1.6 crop.

the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 is great, but I think the new Canon EF-S 17-85 IS is the best walkaround today, on 1.6crop it has the same angle as the 28-135 IS but the optics are much better.

as for the 24-70L, it's great, but it is way to heavy for a walkaround, and it costs an arm & a leg ;)

I have the 70-200L f2.8 IS, and as a walkaround.. well it's so heavy that your neck starts to hurt after 20 minutes, due to the weight of the camera+lens. (using the neckstrap)

That's a very good point; the 24-70 does indeed weigh a ton. And I am sure it just gets magnified after carrying it all day. Something to consider.

Without any HOPE of owning one... I think the best all around lens would be the Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L. ;-D

Now this isn't a zoom, but it has to be the best to carry around with you for walk around shooting :)

I have the 80-200L which weighs similarly to that one. I don't find it too heavy at all to walk around with.

Besides the kit lens, I have the 24-70 L, and the 70-200 2.8 L IS. The 17-40 is in the mail as well. Up till now, the 24-70 is my no doubt favorite for a walk around lens. While it is heavy, it's not near as bad as the 70-200, and for what I shoot, more versatile. Note that I do not carry my camera on a neck strap, but with the wrist strap, and after a day of wandering around, I really don't feel it that much. At any rate, not enough to trade in for something less. Good luck.

I agree, cause you don't have to get as close to your subject.....less walking! :-)
