Just scored myself a photographer's pass and a ticket for Lulu and Elton John tonight, I hope it's more successful than my last big gig (publicity manager hadn't informed tour manager).
I'm only allowed to photograph the first two songs of each performer!
Tickets are really expensive though, cheapest are £35 and I think I have the £70 ticket... shame I'm not really into either performer. Still, it's a big event for our town (Huddersfield) so it would have been a shame to miss it. I'll also be reviewing the event.
Watch here for photos!

Fake it!

But not being a big fan should make it easier to write an objective review. Nice capture.

Imagine Elton John with hair and no bitchiness.

Congratulations! That should be a great show with lots of cool lighting. The standard here is 3 songs, so you're getting short-changed but it'll still kickass!

You might be a redneck if your first reaction to Lulu was an image of the plus-sized lady who used to be on Hee-Haw years and years ago. ;)

Wow, that was intense!
We had a very over-enthusiastic tour manager who sheperded us like a sheepdog. This was my first really big gig, I can't believe the amount of huge (and I mean massive) L-glass lenses that surrounded me. It was a gig in a football stadium, and it was raining (grmph), which meant I had to change lenses to get one with a decent lens hood.
Lulu was great (only 2 songs allowed), but Elton John only allowed one(!) song, so it was pretty intense trying to capture that one... especially with a lens change. I MUST get another camera body. Maybe when the 5D comes out. Once he sat at his piano, there was only really one place to take photos from, so half a dozen of us photographers suddenly got very friendly.
What did I learn tonight?
Get another body.
Only use my 75-300mm out of my available lenses during a gig.
My shower cap from holiday is very handy when it rains for my camera.
Calm down, don't let the adrenaline make me get carried away... time my shots more carefully instead of taking several a second.
1/90s is NOT fast enough. I thought it would be. I've still got some sharp shots, but loads of really well composed shots are just a little too blurred.
I found one of the photographers taking crowd shots later, which I thought was not allowed... apparently he asked and was granted permission for crowd shots only after the 1st song... I must ask for this in future.
I do have some great shots though, I'll try and post them to this thread tomorrow, but I am unbelievably busy.
BTW, I have to say that I've never been an Elton John fan, but some of the songs were just incredible, especially when he let rip and embelished Jools Holland-type stuff. Great musicians, but the drummers in both bands were just a little too solid for my liking, lacking the energy needed to get the crowd on it's feet.

I should add that I shot a massive wedding in Italy last week, no expense spared (except the photographer it seems!)... and that was a piece of cake to take great shots of compared to this gig! Gig photography is tough!

Here are a few pics from the gig! I have to say I'm quite pleased with how mine turned out, having had a look at my competitors' photos in the paper today. ;-)

There are quite a few more, but I'm up to my eyeballs in photos (thousands from my holiday and a wedding, with loads of other shoots piling up!).

Great stuff !! They seem to have very good lighting. What setting did you have ? ISO, Aperture and Shutter ?
06/04/2005 02:46:38 PM · #18
The lighting was actually quite rubbish, especially for Lulu... I think they were keeping all the effects for when it started to get dark. Lulu had virtually no lighting, I happened to catch it here on the rare occasion that some lights came on. As far as gigs go, it had one of the most lacklustre displays I've come across. There was an LCD-matrix type affair at the back of the Elton John stage which you can see here, which provided pinball-type effects (Pinball Wizard was the 1st song)... but that was as exciting as it got until it got dark near the end of the gig.
I used manual all the way through, using F5.6, 1/90s (too slow!!) and ISO1600. I need a new lens!

ISO 1600 ? and its that clean ? my 10D seems to have problems at ISO 800 or even 400 is not good :(

That's why I bought the camera ;-)
It's about on a par with the 20D on noise levels.

can't wait to see some more.

She also starred in the 1967 movie of the same name opposite Sidney Poitier. In the USA she was more or less a one-shot hit maker but she had a singing career in UK before that. She later did some duets with David Bowie, and at one point she was married to one of the Gibbs brothers of BeeGees fame. Some may remember a more recent appearance in an episode of the 2003 PBS series Red, White & Blues where she teamed with Jeff Beck and Van Morrison.

I confess that I was one among millions of young men who had a crush on her in the late 60's. She looks younger than I would have expected, and apparently still travels the music scene in good company.
